If you wanted to build a SBR could you buy a AR pistol and then do a Form 1 and add a stock to make it a rifle? Is this a really stupid question? Just wondering. If so is it cheaper to go that route or just the SBR upper route?

I believe you have to have it engraved on a Form 1.  Still new at the NFA rules though.

My understanding is that the reciever can then be used with a stock/folding stock/pistol grip and pretty much any length barrel.  Something about having to specify the caliber makes me wonder, I wanted to SBR and have different uppers, like .22 and .223.  I think that SBR will be my next NFA, if not another suppressor.

Price?  Whatever the cost of a short barrel vs replacement stock...  Tax stamp is the same.

That is an interesting thought,i been wondering about it too.If i order a stripped lower and built it as pistol lower i can order a pistol upper. Then apply for Form 1 to SBR it.I know the lower will then need to be engraved for that SBR Stamp but. While its still in pistol form do those need to be marked as a pistol?

Conceivably, it sounds like it should work just like SBR'ing any old AR lower since that's the part with the serial # and the part that gets registered.  That way you can shoot it still while waiting on your forms.  Make sure you don't have the parts available to make it an SBR, though!  I wouldn't bother making an order for any part (i.e. a backstock in this case) until you've already got the form in your hand.

I believe the pistol version is registered as a pistol, and rifle version is rifle?  So if you buy a receiver, are they sold as a rifle receiver?  I really hate this SBR legal stuff.  I don't know if I would go changing the stuff around unless I knew exactly what the laws were.  If you are going SBR, I would proceed directly to that, and not mess about with changing things.  My plan is to get a lower registered as SBR, receiver only, as I have a parts kit, then add the short upper of my choice.  Well once my suppressor shows up.

There is a great thread in the Ar Pistol section that answered my questions, he even has a letter from the BATFE.
I am going to build my pistol with my stripped new lower that was 4473 as 'Other" and SBR it later when i get a stamp...
