We hope that it will be available in both the Light and Heavy by 2008!

Good Afternoon-
Can you tell me if the SCAR will be sold to the US civilian market as
well?  If so, when and which versions will be available?

This is what FN told me earlier in the year.

Tell them about the developing state of the (new-age, freak-show) political landscape & see if they can push up the commercial release date.

There are several new guns that I want, such as a Sig 556 and a couple of the new Glocks with manual safeties.  A SCAR, H or L would go right to the top of my list.  I think we are gonna be okay if FN can release them in '08.  It is January of '09 that scares me.

Just out of curiousity, anyone know when the SCAR will go into full production for uncle sam?  The sooner that happens the sooner we'll see semi versions.  I wouldn't mind having the H model with a 7.62x39 conversion  Being able to shoot 7.62x39 and 7.62x51 through the same gun would be sweeeeet.  Hopefully we'll see some nice accessories start to come out.  Magpul already has stocks in the works for the SCAR.

Does anyone know how the SCAR would compare to the 416 as far as the gas system goes?  I saw a video of several different evaluators shooting the 416 and immediately after shooting it they opened it up and held the bolt in their hands and it was cold.  No heat transfer from the gas piston back into the receiver.  Does the SCAR's gas system operate in a similar fasion?  Maybe just as good or even better?  Also, any new pics out there?

The SCAR does not use a long stroke piston.  Clint Lynch, one of the engineers at FN USA, described the operating system over on the Lightfighter forums.  The SCAR uses a short stroke piston that is captive in the gasblock.  He described it as similar to the valve in a engine......  i.e. a small piston with a return spring behind it.

Notice the carrier extension & the gas tappet coming off the front sight base in the photo:

The SCAR tappet impacts that carrier extension to drive the bolt.  No "long-stroke" piston is employed.
