| Looks like I will have enough money saved up to buy my new 740 weapon sight here in July and with that time fast approching makeing the choice is getting confusing between the SHP 2+ and the B grade gen 3 alpha tube which are the same price. I would like to see any pictures anyone may have of a 740 or other Nv mono using the dep SHP 2+ tubes in starlight only conditions Rural area NO MOON or City close by which helps to Illum tha area. Also any real field use info with the SHP tube like varmint hunting whatever. My main concern is it's abilty to make a shootable image out to 75 yards without IR on a dark night in a rural area. Anything father out than 75 yards I would use IR to help illum the target but would perfer not to risk being seen at close ranges with the IR red glow which has happened before in the past. At longer ranges the glow seems not to be a problem. |
| Vic just posted some pics in the D300 topic with SHP tube vs gen3 tube under those conditions. In general if you want low light performance goo with the Gen3 tube (grade B means there will be spots but it shouldn't be a huge problem unless they are sitting on top of your reticle) |
| Thanks Vic are those Pics with moon light or not? Also since you have seen both the SHP and alpha B grade tubes how does the SHP 2+ do with star light only in a rural area. Does it get the job done at ranges around 100 yards without IR or is IR a must at 100 yards on a star lit night no moon in a rural area? On the subject of Texas is great I live right on the border and have a few thousand acres leased in Texas and few thousand leased in Oklahoma. Texas hunting laws are much better than Oklahoma as far as night hunting is concerned. Also there is alot of wild hogs down there that need some lead in their diets. |
The pics I depicted with the MUM had NO moon help at all, and the 740 had a quarter moon that was obstructed with haze and clouds. As Wes stated, there will be NO problem shooting a 100 yards with the 740 SHP with no IR illumination. If you look very close at the 740 pic above, I placed the cross hairs (dot) over a 12"x12" paper target. The target stand itself is 14" wide x 36" high. (A cardboard man silhouette from the waist up), all this at 200M. Btw, Wes1 is the one who took the pics above in regards to the PIG and weapon above and gave the feedbback. His ranch also spans a GREAT many miles! |
| Cool Thanks for the info it is a great help. Victor I must say after years of buying Nv around the Net I have seen No one that has taken the time to post the number of pictures of various setups and through the tube shots you have done. I for one thank you for your time! I know it is a great help to many others also I wish you were around years ago you could have saved my some time and money. |
Your welcome Terry, thank you for the kind words. When I first set out in NV in 1994, I went through sooo much pain with no valid literature and pics and also lost money and time. |

Hey, those pics look familiar!!! Especially the bottom one.."Don't hold high Vic, don't hold high..."I think that missed yote is still runnin' for the border from 300! That no moon pic should indeed look brighter on what I have experienced through the tube of course and also my camera shots. Your first two came out very well. You set the digi on auto and canceling the flash? Thanks for the pics Wes! Edited to add....Did you use the "Camera Zoom" on 740cpics? After looking at the pics, it could appear so? Did you also pop the suttered eye guard off? I do not use the zoom feature at all, just auto at 1x. When I experiemented with the zoom on the camera, I always got grainy and darker shots. Hope this helps. |
| The camera was on the same selection as the earlier pics.I took the day pic the next day. It's my camera, I have compared my camera to others(a friend's Fuji does very well) and mine always has a darker image, especially with no moon and cloudy.Like I said I could see the tractor fine. Terry get the D740 SHP, you won't be dissapointed. |
