What are your thought on web gear for a post SHTF scenario i.e.. vests, sub loads, drop leg holsters or just put an extra magazine in your pants pocket? should we all be prepared to join a civilian militia to fend off street gangs, Chinese and Obama supporters? ;)

I just bought a like-new tactical diaper bag for a dollar at a reuse center . It holds 9 AR or AK mags in the diaper pockets and tons of shotgun ammo and handguns in the main compartment.

I'm all set now.

Look at MOLLE setups and what kind of plates/inserts, if any you feel that you need. Also, best advise on gear - go with what you NEED and can run a few blocks in as opposed to what looks cool.

I'd be more worried about zombies anyways.

If you are here, I will make assumptions, so, you should have some form of kit to carry gear during whatever incident occurs.  This can be something as simple/non militaristic looking as a  photographer's vest, or a bare-bones, low profile chest rig.

If you just need to carry a few extra mags and some water, get an old LC-1 ALICE rig, they are cheap, and tough as nails.

I have a minimalistic outlook due to be disabled, so I use a SKD/Eagle Universal Rig:

8 AR or 4 FAL Mags, 2 .45 G21 Mags, 2 Smokes (1 white screening, 1 red distress), knife, battle dressing, and a survival kit inside the chest rig body.

Those ALS Mini's came from a fellow ARfcommer, can't remember his name, just the problems I had getting my product after paying.  He actually mailed them US Post Priority Mail, and it sailed right on through...lol

I think having a military style magazine fed rifle and not having the ability to cary a few extra magazines for it is pretty silly.  What you get should be based on what you perceive a SHTF event as, and your personal fitness level and willingness to train.

There is the argument that wearing web gear would "single you out" in a SHTF event.  This might seem a logical argument until you think about it for a second?  Wouldn't holding a rifle single you out faster than LBE?  If the S has HTF so completely that you need to be standing around with a rifle, it's bad enough to be standing around with LBE.  If the S has HTF to the point that you need to have you rifle in the backseat of your vehicle then you should have some spare mags with it.  And LBE is a good place to store those.

Now as to what LBE do you get... again that is up to you.  Some general options include 1) a low key vest, either a 511 or something less specialized.  PRO: can still be fairly low key, comfortable CON: can be hot and not so low key during certain times of the year, don't carry many mags 2) a classic LBE PRO: cheap as dirt, modular and durable CON: not as comfortable as some of the stuff out now, doesn't work with never stuff very well 3) some kind of modular low profile chest rig PRO: most comfortable, can cary a a good mid range number of mags, with some (MOLLE models) other stuff can be added CON: some are quite expensive, hard to balance 4) Modular vest PROS can carry large loads comfortably, very modular CON: can be very expensive, gets hot as hell in the summer 5) an armored vest or plate carrier PRO: It's armored... DUH CON: heavy and expensive, hot as hell

I've written more about it here, with examples and pics
