My brother is looking at a SIG556. He already has an RRA AR type rifle. Are they reliable? How do they handle? Are they worth the extra $300? |
|
Right now, they are brand new, and dealers are scalping people for over $2k for these things - so, no chance of getting one at MSRP for many months right now..... Visit: ps90forum.com |
That is true in some instances but there are some reasonable prices to be had on these if you look around enough. There are several guys who've picked them up from local dealers for under $1,199. I snagged two at a local gun shop for MSRP ($1,299) a couple months back when the very first few hit the street. There is probably a 556 hanging on a gun store wall near you at or near MSRP. The gunbroker auction prices have dropped way down from the $2,500 high mark set upon release to around $1,550. |
| My brother really loves the AR15 system, He is considering the 556 but, I think that He might be better off buying another AR because he likes them so much, and he would save some money. He is considering the 556 for its piston system. For those of you that own 556s how do you like them? How do they stack up against your ARs? |
I would say that the AR15 offers far better ergonomics, more accessories and is not less reliable than a SIG 55X under the condition I used it. If your brother likes the AR15 and is considering a piston system, I would recommend having a look at a piston AR15 (POF, LW). There is a excellent discussion at: 10-8 |
The operating system of the 556 should run much cleaner and in turn provide better reliability. The real competition for the 556 would be the piston ARs. Thus far, they seem to be in a much higher price bracket though ($1,000+ just for the upper half of the gun). |
That 10-8 thread predates the release of the 556 and is really a comparo of the original 55X series vs. the ARs. I wish I was one of you lucky guys who keeps getting utterly reliable DI ARs. I've never seen one like that. |
| Is SIG going to release a folding stock model later or would it be better to buy the 556 and get an adapter for an AR folder? I have a chance to pick up a 556 and was wondering if it's worth waiting for a folding model later. I have an AR with an Ares G-35,but have not shot it yet. |
