I only had about 30 mintues at the range and 100 rounds of ammo.  There was moderate, constant rain (pre-pouring) and I shot about half the rounds exposed to the rain.

Fired:

55gr Wolf FMJ
55gr American Eagle Brass

Ammo was mixed and matched in the mags, this has proven to get Brass cases stuck in my AR15s, it didn't effect my SIG at all.  Fired at 100 yard targets - bowling pins - and did fairly well for not being zero'd.

Rifle Handles EXTREMELY well.  I love the ergonomics and the front handguard.  Buttstock doesn't like to close on the first (closest) position, requires a lot of working to get it to lock in place.  Felt almost no recoil due to pad on buttstock.

Trigger was a bit odd at first but the more I dry fire it the more I like it, even though it is a big spongy.

I'm extremely pleased with this rifle and will plan on adding many more to my collection.

This is the rifle I've been looking forward to for a long time, AR15 ergonomics (actually I like the ergos on the SIG better) with AK reliability (hopefully it pans out to this in the future).  I see no reason to own any more GAY-R-15s in the future, will still keep my AKs though.

Wasn't able to get any field shots.

I took the rifle apart at home and while following the instructions in the manual managed to cause a hairline fracture in the upper handguard.  I was taking it off and I heard a "crack!"  Didn't sound normal so I looked down and saw a hairline fracture.  Fortunately this has no effect on the handguard and when the lower and upper handguards are together they are very sturdy, so even if the crack did increase it would have no effect.

I do plan on buying a replacement handguard though when SIG offers them in the Summer so I have a backup.

Sorry I can't post more I have to get back to work!   Hope this helps a few of you decide on if you want a SIG or not.  I love it!!!

Plastic seems a little brittle/fragile if it cracked on the first teardown.....that's a bummer.

Nice rifle.......I may consider one when they become more available.

I will still keep my "GAY-R-15s" though

I have two witty sarcastic remarks. I can't decide which is better so I will post them both.

1. See that short tubular looking thing up top.  It is a red dot.

2. What do you mean sights? Are these assault rifles supposed to be shot from the hip in order to spray shopping malls with lead?

you are finding more and more high end firearms sold with no sights. I find this totaly unexceptable. That is like buying a Corvette and not getting any tires. It is just another way to get you to spend more of your hard earned money for something that should be standard and sold with the weapon.

But....congrats on the new toy! Hope you enjoy it!

Disagree. Its more like buying a racecar and it comes primered in flat white - ready for your choice of paint (since you ARE going to customize it).

Everyone uses IPSC-style red dots these days (lets be honest - the IPSC boys pioneered these sights). There are too many options - even among the ones "officially" fielded in combat by our boys overseas.

Irons are a quaint, old-fashioned idea for back up if yout dot fails. But required? I don't think so.

That`s why I`m looking forward to my MSAR StG 556...comes with a scope AND back up Tritiums on top!

Sweet gun though!

The plastic on the 556 isnt exactly durable. This isnt the first report of them cracking during takedown.

And beware of rust. The "finish" (LOL!) is so shitty even a sneeze will cause oxidation.

No. I am just a shooter.  Have built up one or two flat top uppers over the years and having to add an optic is just part of the build I suppose.

Anyone else notice from the press pictures  of our boys overseas that no two rifles seem to be the same anymore? Everything is customized/altered/added-to, etc.

Yes it is really nice to be able to customize the gun but it should still come with standard sights even if you will be changing them out.

I haven't seen a single report of rust since the 556 was introduced and I've been following since when the first person got theirs in early december...

Thats wonderful logic, at the range! When your being shot at and your life is on the line, when an optic goes down, you'll be wishin for those irons.

Perhaps I should have been more clear: as back-up in a situation where you might NEED back up sights - yes, they are a good idea. Anyone notice that even the M24 & M40 are issued with back up iron sights? And even the best dots sometimes do go down - especially with the hard use they are seeing overseas right now.

BUT - which brand back up sights are best? Again, Sig made the right choice in not charging you for stuff you will probably change out anyway.  People would be buying Sig 556 irons based on the "flavor-of-the-week" BUIS everyone tells you to buy on ARFCOM.

Wrong.

A lot of us still use and enjoy irons.   Even rudimentary irons should be basic on EVERY rifle.

Well, irons have not been "standard" on many rifles for as long as I have been into guns--that's 1992. Some rifles will not  even take them with out major gunsmithing. I'm thinking MOST manufacturers bolt rifles that you see in any sporting goods store. My benelli R1 had them "available", but not included and very expensive.

I like BUIS on my guns, but that's what they are--back ups.  They are hardly ever used.  In fact, I usually just buy what's cheap for irons and spend more money on the optic.  Then again, irons are not cheap anymore.

If I don't have room for irons and optics, I go with the optic.

Also, my optics are always on QR mounts, so I can take them off and either use or install the irons.  I never intentionally co-witness my irons with my optics, because I hate the optics messed up with the irons in there.

Yeah, I'm not much of a tactical ninja, I'll leave that for others.

As far as SHTF...that's not what civvy guns are for. They are *mostly* for the range or hunting.  They need to last just long enough to pick up something really useful from someone else.

irons have their own ailments that affect them as well.

So, SIG did not commit blasphemy for not putting irons on their rifle.  My XCR did not come with irons, either.  Nor many guns I own that I really like.

I only had my SIG out in the pouring rain for about 30 minutes but it collected a nice amount of water on the surface.  When I was done I took the only dry material I had - some kleenex - and dryed the SIG off as best as I could.

I don't see any rust.  I really like the ergonomics on this rifle.  The butt-ugly, easily cracking handguard has grown on me.

As far as Irons...  I plan on buying a Burris scope for this rifle ($169) and that's about it.  Irons are pretty spendy, and I don't care for the flip up types.

My 556 has been wet also and no rust that I can see.

And all this about the iron sites, does the XCR come standard with iron sites?  From everything I'm seeing it doesn't, they are a $100 option.

So, the going price for an XCR seems to be $1499 and the 556 I paid $1299.  Hmmm.

Yeah. That would so absolutely suck if your optic failed............and you had to leave the range before you ran out of ammo because you don't have backup irons.

I just love how everyone on this board absolutely must ensure that every firearm they own is ready to fight for their single handedly winning World War III against the Islamic-Nazi-commie invasion force of zombies from outer space.

Most of my guns are for fun at the range.  I have my few set up for World War III against the Islamic-Nazi-commie invasion force of zombies from outer space.  The rest are for fun or hunting.

That being said....I have ordered the iron sights for my Sig 556.  I ordered them mostly because every once and a while I just like shooting iron sights.  Secondly for looks. Thirdly to shut people up who say my rifle is not ready for World War III against the Islamic-Nazi-commie invasion force of zombies from outer space, and fourthly to make my Sig 556 ready as a 3rd backup gun in my fight in World War III against the Islamic-Nazi-commie invasion force of zombies from outer space.

I went to the last CMMG shoot where it was all mud and rain all day. My 556 literally got rained on all day. No rust whatsoever.

The finish is ugly as hell and poorly done, but it does do what it's supposed to - protect the metal.

If someone ever comes out with a decent rail/sight combo for it, it'll probably become my go-to rifle.

Nothing wrong with this mindset. Every pistol I own has night sights, even the range guns. Doesnt hurt to have the ability to fire a carbine under all conditions, even the range toys. But I agree that if it isnt your go-to gun than who cares...

I shot one today with an ARMS quick release mount and an Eotech.  It was a little front-heavy, but overall I liked it.  Shot smoothly, very accurate, nice trigger.  I'd be more interested if I could get a fixed stock for it.
