I have just acquired a .22 SMLE to replace the one I had to leave In dear old Blighty, now the butt stock moves backwards about 1/4 inch or so.

So my question is what part am I missing so I can relace it !

Thanks

Nick

The stock bolt is probably loose.
Remove the nose cap, sling swivel, and then the forearm FIRST.
Use a long screwdriver to reach the stock bolt thru the hole in the buttplate. You may have to remove the leather washer down on the hole first. Tighten it down.
DO NOT––-REPEAT––DO NOT turn the stock bolt without removing the forearm first! You will crack the rear of the forearm.

Tried that still has play and the bolt will not come out of the stock I'll give it another go to see if there are any washers missing.

There should be a washer with the stock bolt.

Cut a piece of leather and place it between the reciever and butt stock.

If the bolt isn't coming out, it might be partially stripped; might be the reason it's loose.

Simply tightening up the bolt should remove the problem; you may need a washer as a spacer. They weren't always used - just when needed to get a tight lockup.

Is yours a No. 2 Mk. IV, or an earlier conversion?
