I'm interested in a SPAS-12.  I shot one today at a local gun club I belong to and it was a very good experience.  The guy bought it over 10 years ago and never uses it.  He even thought it was jammed, but the safety was just on :)  Anyway, he paid $300 for it when he bought it, and he wants to sell it.  I didn't ask what he wanted for it, but what would be a "fair price" and what would be a "steal"?  Thanks!

BTW.  It is in perfect condition, and from what I can tell, it isn't a replica, but the real thing by Frencci (spelling?  no idea).  It has the foldable stock with the little half-ring thing that you can attach the lock your arm into to shoot from the hip.

Those shotguns sell for around 800 - 1000 dollars.  There are several factors in determining the value such as:

Folding stock complete with hook
Push button as opposed to lever type safety
Magazine extension
Condition of weapon
Barrel extension

Yeah, like JoeStalin said, the SPAS-12 has 4 different features and they left the factory with many different combinations of these features. These can be seen at SPAS-12.COM

The 4 features are:
The stock--some were folding, some were fixed.
The magazine capacity--some held 5, some held 8.
Front sight location--some were near end of barrel, some back towards receiver.
Safety type--some had lever safeties, some had push-button safeties. The lever-type safeties were recalled due to problems.

The most expensive model would be one with the folding stock w/hook, 8-shot mag tube, forward front sight, and push-button safety. I never see the folding-stock versions under $1000 anymore.

Thanks for the info.  This one has a folding stock, with the hook, it has 5-round capacity, but he thought it was 8.  Can you only have 5 rounds in when it's semi-auto?  He thought he could put 8 in at one time, don't know for sure however.  It has the sights by the end of the barrel, and it has a lever-type safety.  I don't think this guy ever shot it or even knows anything about it.  I am now aware of the lever type safety being very dangerous, and I will use this as a point of sale when/if I see him again.  I really hope I do ssee him again, because it was a VERY fun gun to shoot!  One more quick question, what kind of shells should one use in a SPAS-12?  I know that they have to be 2.75", but I don't know what kind of shot to use.  Can slugs be used?  I don't think it had a rifled barrel, but I might be wrong.  Can it be used for trap/clays?  I like shooting trap, and don't own a shotgun, so I have to justify this purchase somehow, at least to myself :)

Thanks!

You can shoot slugs out of it, but not with the accuracy of a rifled bore. You can also attempt to shoot trap but since it has a cylinder bore you probably won't hit much since the barrel is not choked.

Can you only have 5 rounds in when it's semi-auto?

The number of rounds is NOT restricted in a SPAS-12, due to its grandfathered "assault weapon" status.

The information in the SPAS12 website is very good so be sure to read it over.  I have a SPAS12 with a fixed stock and 8 round capacity tube.  The SPAS 12 is very complicated!  If you have to think about how to program your VCR you may not want to use it as a primary home defence gun.  I know I am not as familiar as I should be with mine.

I'd say definitely get it.
The SPAS-12 is an awesome WEAPON
(it's only intended application).
It just takes a little practice to get used to.
It's a thinking man's shotgun.
