Hi guys, i have local fun store with a 98% cond. HK SP-89. Freaking beautiful gun! Anyway 2 ?'s.......first, is the only diff. b/t the sp-89s and then the mp-5k the removal of k grip and addition of a foregrip w muzzle guard? Lastly, would $3500 be a fair price for the 89 in the pic below? http://www.marksgunsearch.com/files/images/dsc0343420100313120620.jpg The SP89 is the semi auto MP5K, so yes really the only thing are the Vertical grip is removed (can be installed if registered as an AOW or SBR) and the standard modifications to make the H&K semi by legal definition. It also does not have the paddle magazine release. It most likely has a semi auto bolt carrier, but works fine if your not planning on installing a sear 3500$ is a great price. I would buy it if I were you |
|
Thanks gents, i thought i had been used to seeing them in the 4k range......and i have never seen one that wasnt tucked away in a corner after it was bought new yrs. ago that looks as good as this gun.
Good deal or not, $3500 is a stretch for a gun that is less than practical or for me at least. However i have wanted one for sooo many yrs now and besides a 94 w. k grip and vented shroud i cannot think of one i have wanted as long. I really think i should hold out for the 94 and dress it like i want and then have a much more practical gun for me.....if i lived in a state where i could sbr the K than no doubts i would have already prob. pulled the trigger on this sp89. |
|
Only thing I'm going to say is that I bought a clone and SBR'd it. Thought it was the gun I HAD to have. All it does is sit in the safe. I never use it because it's so silly really. Just my experience that I had nothing to do with it once it was made...competitions were out...it's not a subgun...so not much to do but plink...it just lost it's glitz once I actually had it in my hands.
ymmv |
| I bought an original HK SP89 and SBR'd it as well. It is pretty easy to do, I put on the forward grip and a Choate folding stock. Tax stamp/form 1 took 5 months, the actual conversion 5 minutes. It makes a very handy weapon in SBR configuration. As a handgun...not so much. |

I'm just right over here in TX, not too far from you. I'll put my sear in it and give it a workout. |
| I looked at this gun yesterday afternoon. Looked really good and appeared to be original finish but I haven't handled enough HK SP89s to be an expert. Finally decided that I'm happy with my MKE AT-94K for a third of the price. If I had a sear it would be a different story. |
|
i have seen exactly 2 of them in 20 years of going to gun shops.
1st was in 1992.. $1200.00 2nd was about 5 years back... guy was already buying it, beat me by 10 minutes. $ 2000.00 i think. if i was going to pick one gun to make a pdw out of, it would be the sp89/mp5k. collapsible stock, 30 round mags, foreward grip, micro aimpoint, supressor. |

Quoted: The MKE AT-94K is th Turkish made version of th SP89. Like the SP89 the barrel is even with the front sight, no extension & suppressor attachment lugs. It differs in that there is a block in the receiver to prevent the insertion of a full-auto carrier, a requirement by BATF to allow importation. It also has the paddle release already installed. I've only put 75 rds. through mine but I really like it and HK and ATI mags fit well.

Question: Do you have to abide by 922r when making an SBR out of an SP89 or are they considered Pre-Ban? A real 89 is pre-ban, so I don't think that 922R applies to it. Don't believe you are 100% correct on this one... 922(r) is (I believe) a 1989 law. So SP89s that got in before it took effect would appear to be legal to SBR w/o parts count issues, but those imported after 1989 would be pre-ban, but not pre import ban, and thus subject to 922(r). |

Guess I'm a statistical outlier then. If I have to use a weapon for home defense I've already come up on the wrong end of probability, I'm going to stack the odds as high in my favor as I can to make sure me and mine come out safe. Right now that job goes to my 12" AR with suppressor. In keeping with the original theme, I'd always wanted an SP89 also, had the cash at one point when they were around $3K but spent it on other stuff. Just got around to shooting my new Cohairie 89K with full size receiver and am enjoying it. Bottom line is do you value the gun more than the money, or whatever you'd spend that money on? If so, get it. |

If so, get it. I had a chance to buy an SP89 (and wanted to, and could afford to) back when they were going for $1000 and you could get them at any gun show. But I was a cheapskate and couldn't see the reason to get one when a Sites Spectre 9mm was essentially the same thing and only cost $350. So I went with the Italian and now they are out of business. Oops. I didn't realize at the time that I would eventually have an HK sear. That might have changed my choice back then. |

Man you guys are killing me....GREAT replies, all of them and maybe to damn good I have one of those gsg5 pks......and have put many k's of rounds down the pipe and all be it a very fun weapon, w/o having sbr'd it and no buttstock....i can promise this would be one of my last choices for PD or HD and i think i can safely make that statement because the sp89 and the gsg5pk weight, feel etc are spot on.......and the upgrade to 9mm doesnt do it for me ![]() ![]() and my groups look prob. like ![]() ![]() .
At the end of the day, no matter how much you dont need it or whatever.....its still a SP-89 |

I've been doing some internet research and I'm beginning to wonder if this is the case. 922r took effect on 11/30/90 and the SP89 in question had a date code of KD which is 1993. It was not subject to 922r because it was a pistol, not when it was imported. The SP89 was banned by name in an Clinton executive order in 1993. It can be considered pre-ban to the 1994 Crime bill but that law had nothing to do with importation and 922r. But 922r is not about when a weapon is imported but when it is assembled into an non-importable configuration. Converting a SP89 to a SBR without adding domestic parts was ok because until now all NFA weapons were exempt from 922r. With the recent BATF letter changing that interpretation concerning SBRs not only is there a question of whether you need to follow 922r when making a HK SP89 an SBR now but is there a grandfather date for SP89s already converted? |

Few more pics of this unreal sexy moma.....even though starting at about 5 yrs old, the mp5 pdw and somewhat by extension the k/ sp-89 has been at least aesthetically speaking my all time favorite firearm and had many mock ups as kid....back in the day when they looked real and the "man" didnt make get a tax stamp to remove the orange from your toy gun If i cannot have it, i would love to see a fellow arfcom buddy scoop it up and then let me do a little vicarious loving...so if you are interested, you can im or pm me and i can shoot you the gunstores info(dealt w. them my whole life, very established business). At least that is the explanation I have been given, absent any Case Law. |

Interesting point on the manufacturing... Perhaps an important distinction... That July 2009 SBR letter from the ATF is prob. messing a lot of people up. |

so, the 64 mllion dollar question is....... if i buy the turkish mp5k...... can i sbr it????? no reason for me to buy it, if i cant sbr the damn thing. someone figure it out... i know we have some lawyers here somewhere. i would not think it would be a problem, since the older bans, named guns, by their name, not descriptions, such as how the ar-15 was banned, but xm-15, and a ton of other newer named rifles were still being made... colt hbar etc........ sp-89 MIGHT be specifically mentioned, but unless they said, and all copies, and replicas, we should be legally to do what we please with it.
my plans are to buy at least 2, of them, maybe 4....... asap. then as i get the money, 1. buy guns...and magazines..... never know when a bans a coming 2 sbr all of them... 3. buy some kind of collapsible stocks, side folding, or h&k collapsing 4. buy new front grips 5. modify or replace barrel to accept supressor 6 buy some small supressors, short and lightweight as possible. 7. possibly add a surefire tactical light/laser combo for sighting, ( unless it blockes iron sights, ), then ill add it to a side mount, and use a aimpoint micro. i have always loved these guns, and to sbr one would be heaven..... too bad i cant get a full auto one. luckily the local sherriff said he would sign off on the paperwork. ill probably sbr my gsg5k, and buy a second one as well, and sbr it, just for the really cheap practice ammo.. and almost exact weapon. no im not rich..... this would take me 5 years to accomplich... |
