M4-Daddy,

My 1st FAL - I absolutely love it! The current production STG's will have a new US manufactured barrel as DSA has depleted all the original Steyr barrels (I lucked out and purchased before they ran out - so mine has an original barrel). Irregardless, DSA is top notch and you will not be disappointed.

Great rifles! I got one of the DSA Stg58 Carbines (18" barrel) and when I ordered it had them put the plastic handguards on. My buddy bought one with the metal handguards and they heat up fast! hock.gif The plastic handguards keep it cool. I don't know what they cost now; but the handguards were only $40 more when I got mine. Well worth it.

Totally reliable, great fit and finish, and my 18" barrel Stg was hitting man-sized metal silhouettes at 750 yards with South African ball ammo, no problem. Need I say more? http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff303/Gyrene8490/Stg585trimmed.jpg

I'd say:
1 You can't go wrong with the DSA STG58.
2 You can't just buy one FAL.

If you're looking for a place to buy - Doug at USMadeFAL.com is a good guy to deal with. Or if you can get a local FFL to order direct from DSA you can get a better deal. They also show up on gunbroker.com and the EE here regularly.

+1 on the plastic handguard.

Get a type 1 for your first and then you have a good reason to get the type 2 next.
Seriously take a look at the links below and you should be able to decide what you like best.

You wouldn't happen to know the serial number range or production date when the change to American made barrels on?

I wouldn't fret too much about it.  By all accounts the new US barrels they are using are good, and as a plus they are brand new.

Anyone have a Hi Res. picture of a STG58 that they got from DSA?

These aren't particularly hi-res... but they are of the one I picked up last weekend.

Ignore the ugly-ass carpet in my workshop... it's just an area rug so I don't break crap if I drop it.

DSA StG58 Para

Get one, you'll not be dissapointed.
If DSA is no longer shipping them with Steyr barrels, I'd probably have a kit built or buy an older DSA or already built kit. The Steyr barrel is superior to the US barrel IMO, most of these Steyr rifles were shot very little if at all, and they had the best barrels of all the FALs.

Yes, it's a DSA: www.dsarms.com/prodinfo.asp?number=STG58CP

It's the 18" version.  The finish on it is beautiful.  I've only had it a few days... so no range time yet, but the action is super smooth (granted, it's still an FAL... so you can't baby it.)  The trigger feels excellent.  Overall, I am very impressed with it.

Here is another pic of it, with a couple of its .308 buddies:
