I wanted to know how my STG's would perform in cold weather so this morning I tried a little test.
I selected my 2nd STG (the one that MSAR fixed after initial FTE's), it's had appx 1.2K rds through it w/o being cleaned, primarily mixed Prvi Partizan M193 & Silver Bear 62gr, the last 200rds being Wolf Poly 55gr. I left it out all night in the cold (got a little snow on it, in fact) along w/2 new 30rd mags and a new 42rd mag, all loaded w/Silver Bear (102rds total). I did no cold weather prepping/cleaning/lubing and wanted less than optimal ammo w/new & untested mags. Hit the range at daybreak, temp was 27 degrees F. Tossed out 3 empty 1gal milk jugs at 25-40yds and started w/the 30rd mags doing rapid double taps. Both 30rd mags were 100% leaving the 42rd mag for last. It also was 100% w/the bolt locking back after the last shot. While not a definitive test I will say I'm very pleased w/the performance of the STG under these conditions. Tomac |

I shot mine last week, the weather was 34 degrees and pouring freezing rain. Ran like a champ with no issues, although my cheek became very cold after being on a wet stock after a while. When I puleld it out of the case wehn I got home, condensation was on the whoel gun and the factory optic was fogged, but 15 minutes in a dry apartment took care of that. No rust or issues at all that I can find.

Hmm, 27 degrees so the temp was probably in the teens somewhere at the low during the night. Any idea how cold the temp dropped during the night?
Not a bad test, but I wonder how the rifle would perform sub zero conditions? My guess would be fairly well thanks to the polymer, but the tight tolerances of the metal would be interesting to see how that reacts to the colder temps. |

The AUG is an excellent cold weather firearm. The large trigger guard allows for use with gloved hand and the VFG folds nicely out of the way. Plus, it's SHORT OVERALL LENGTH (OAL) makes it easier to cross country ski with. I'm from Michigan and I've done a lot of cross country skiing with my A2. I think the coldest I ever had my A2 outdoors in was mid-teens to low twenties.

Weather report says nighttime low was 16F (I was hoping for the 0F predicted earlier in the week). I deliberately left the rifle dirty, used new untested mags & steel-cased ammo to see if I could force a low-temp malfunction. I ran 102rds only as I figure after that many rds the rifle has warmed up and cold is no longer a reliability variable. We don't often get sub-zero temps here in this part of Idaho but if we do I plan on repeating this test. I'm thinking that a new rifle would be at greater risk since tolerances would still be tight. Regardless, I'm pleased w/the low-temp performance so far. Tomac |
