I have a question that I’m hoping you all would help me with. My brother is needing (urgently) a safe for gun storage. He has 3 long guns and several handguns, and a baby on the way. He has no safe which is a problem for many reasons, and my budget is $400 or less to get him one for Christmas. I of course have seen the 2 on Black Friday special at TSC, the Winchester and the Cannon, for $299. Are either of these acceptable? My husband isn’t thrilled with either of them and I’ve read a few posts on this website but it seems “a safe is better than no safe” and possibly the Winchester is the better of the two. I plan to go look at them in person to check out the fit and finish, but I’d like to get some input from people who are much more familiar and knowledgeable than I am on these things. My one qualm with them is the electronic keypad. I’m concerned that my brother isn’t diligent enough to be on top of the battery situation but I cannot find a dial safe under $600, let alone anywhere near the seeming value of the two at TSC. Anyway, I’m rambling…so give it to me straight; is “a safe better than no safe” and are these worthy enough to protect a child from getting into them and/or offer some level of security? Do you have a better suggestion for $400 or less? Thank you for any insights! |

It's fine for his needs. It won't keep out a determined skilled intruder, but it will keep out kids and petty thieves. It may even protect from a house fire depending on the length of the burn. |

Just get the TSC option. All safes are the same until you get to about 3 grand. And yes Liberty safes are just as shitty as Cannon. Actually neither are even safes technically. You can get into either of them with 9 minutes and an angle grinder. But for what it is, it's cheap and good enough to keep kids out and keep honest people honest. |

There are videos out there of people cutting into a liberty presidential in less than ten minutes with a $10 HF grinder. |

Most people posting here looking for advice are not looking for a TL-15 or TL-30. They’re looking for a RSC that’ll keep their kids out and deter smash and grab burglars. The whole trope about power tools and cutting into safes isn’t useful for anyone, other than as a note to include the safe as only one part of a layered system that includes alarm monitoring, privacy, and insurance. The difference between a cannon and a Liberty is that it’s going to be much easier to pry open a cannon with a prybar. |

And safes aren't waterproof. As I noted, a decent liberty is much better protection against non-motorized forms of attacks like prying than a cannon. Simple things like not having a giant door gap and having better bolt rails and stronger bolt attachments to the rails means that they are better at withstanding the prying attacks. The “zero extra security” thing is only against the worst case scenario. If someone knows your safe is there, sure they’ll prep properly and bring everything they need, regardless of what kind of safe it is. You’re also making assumptions about basements. Down in the south, especially Texas and Florida, basements aren’t a thing in many areas. |
