I sue a few strings of white led Christmas lights.
Does a fine job in there.

I'm tagging this because I'm deliberating the very same question for my new safe.

Here's a couple of reasonably priced units that I'm looking into...

3 of these strung together (one along the top and one down each side)

or maybe several feet of this stuff...
http://www.elementalled.com/ElementalLED-Store/LED-Strip-Lighting/Flexible-LED-Light/sold-by-the-foot-110/product.html

or maybe a couple dozen of these...

ETA:  This xenon set looks nice and they don't need a transformer.

And for a rope light, this looks pretty nice...

Also, Google "cabient lighting" and you'll find lots of other great ideas.  Puck lights are also a nice idea.  I'm leaning toward LED lights simply b/c their cool (temperature), small, and energy efficient.  Be sure to post any other interesting finds.

and LAST BUT NOT LEAST...

Please tell me if you find something better than this as a switch to turn it on an off.  (I insist on making mine come on automatically when the safe door opens.  I don't want to turn the lights on manually)

My local dealer is charging $150 for a 4' long florescent light with "fridge" type switch.  Too me, this seems about right with parts and labor.

That seems to be about the correct going rate for system like that however I believe that for the same money (or less) and a little time of your own you can do much nicer than a single fluourescent tube (or even 2) in your safe.

I just picked up a great light set from Home Depot.  I can't find it ANYWHERE online (including HD's website).  I should've taken pictures of it before installing it to give you a better idea of what these things are like.  It's a "Hampton Bay 3-Light LED Task and Accent Light Kit".  It consists of 3 pucks, about 2 inches (or so) in diameter each, and only about 1/4" tall (thick).  It's really quite amazing how thin they are.  Each puck contains 9 LEDs and put out a pretty decent amount of light.  I tried taking pictures with all the lights out in the room and only the safe lit up, but the pictures didn't accurately show how well the lights illuminated the inside of the safe.  Best part was that it was only $34 for the entire set.  Bought my own 2-sided tape so I wouldn't have to screw them into the safe, along with some stick on wire/cable clamp thingies to run the wires along the inside corners which I already had.  Took me about 10 minutes to install.

I'd like to note that these are cheap lights.  They look and feel cheap but at the same time, they're very practical and b/c of their size, will remain very well hidden.  I'm going to keep looking around online to see if I can find them and post a link.

This is before I did all the finishing work with the wires.

Do you have a photo from the front with the lights on?

These pictures were taken in a pitch dark room with only the safe lights on.

I left the shutter open an extra second here which is why it looks a little washed out, but trust me, this was with ONLY the safe lights on.

Thanks for the photos.  They work well.  I will have to see if I can get some to rig up.

FattyWorld has a section of fluorescent light that are both battery and corded.  I use a battery powered one that costs $6.

Are you guys just drilling a hole in your safes for the power supply?

My safe had a hole in the back bottom corner.  Actually, the hole was covered by a steel tab that simply needed to be punched out.

when I was searching for the parts to do my own light kit. I found that I could get a 16ft custom cut pre wired strand of led rope lights for ~ $70.00. I was planning to team this up with a "watt stopper" Power strip. it has an occupancy sensor that turns on/off the outlets automatically when movement is detected.

the incandescent rope lights are cheaper of course. you can get 150ft roll w/ connector kit for ~ $80.00. they put out some heat and use more electricity, but it might not matter for this application.

I ended up just ordering my rsc with a florescent light kit though.

$20 rope light from Home Depot. I think it was 18' long. It was exactly enough to go all the way around and up the center.

The picture is blurred so you guys don't laugh at my airsoft but you get the idea.

I found that a 2' $15 fluorescent light could be wedged between the door frame and shelving.  Works like a champ.  I tied it into the same cord as the Goldenrod.
