I'm currently using a Bushnell 3-9x32 and thinking about getting a 3-9x40 for my new target 10/22 rifle. Will the 3-9x40 be too much for the rifle?

I don't think it will be too much.

It's not too much, but whatever you get, make sure it has adjustable objective--very important in any good .22 scope to avoid parallax problems.

It will be exactly the same as your 3-9x32 you already have.
The only difference is it'll be slightly brighter, because of the bigger objective.
The magnification is still to 9 power max...on both.  So you're not gaining anything there.

I'm using a 4-12x40 a/o Leupold, and I can see bullet holes w/12x at 100 yards, no problem.
But this is for prone/position use, not bench.

Most guys who shoot from rest or benches, use at least 24x...many use 32 or 36x...at 25yds
Keep in mind the higher you go in magnification with a cheap scope, the DARKER your view will be.
Most 9x cheap scopes I've seen are bright enough, but once a little glare from the sun hits, or it starts getting dark...you won't be able to see worth shit.

I dumped money into a Leupold...and will never look back

No, its not to much. I have a 10-40x 50mm on one. The advice about the adjustable objective is so right.
