Anyone have any pics of an M1 Garand with a scope?

I'm new to the M1 world. Why is the rear sight on the top M1 covered and the lower one isn't?  The D has a flash suppressor, but other than that, what is the differance?

The M1C's scope mount is attached directly to the receiver, where as the scope mount on the D model is attached to the barrel via a QD screw mount.

Scope mount on M1-D Garand

Scope Mount base on an M1-C rifle (minus scope)

As for the flash hider, the M1D had a five prong, T-37 flash hider that was screwed into the rifle like the cylinder lock and the M1C had the M2 cone shaped flash hider that was attached to the rifle via the bayonet lug, like the grenade launcher attachment

Thanks for the pics. I am thinking about buying a Garand. How hard is it to find the scope mounts and mod to fit?

Here's the M1D Barrel and scope mount.

The scope is an M84 telescopic sight (maker unknown). THe hard part will be to find the scope and perhaps have the barrel fitted int your Garand and checked for proper headspacing.

Unless you like the look of the offset scope mount (and high price), go with one of the new scout mounts that replaces the lower handguard.

It uses a pistol or scout scope, and mounts the scope low over the centerline of the barrel.  Much better sight picture and cheek/chin weld.  A far more natural shooting position.

I have the AmegaRanges mount.  It fits and works wonderfully.

In the Shotgun news I got today Sarco had M84 scopes for a hefty ransom.

Actually, the T-37 is a flash suppressor whereas the the M2 was a flash hider.

Does the AmegaRanges mount allow for more modernscopes than the m84?

Yes, but it must be a LER scope (long eye relief) as in scout or pistol.

edit to add:  it has a weaver rail, so red dots, aimpoints, etc can also be used.

Scoping a Garand is not worth the effort IMHO.  Garands are rapidly moving into collector status, scoping it just butchers the thing and ruins its value.  They've always been a tough rig to scope anyway.  The M1C and D were not that great of a sniper rifle.

+1; I think Garand sniper rifles were a stopgap measure; I would prefer to have an M1903A4 over an M1C/D.
