I'm sure this general topic has been covered a time or two, but -- well -- maybe I have something a little different to ask.

I'm going to be 59 years old in September.  My eyes don't work so well these days, and I'm finding it REAL hard to make out the front sight post when the target is black behind it.  I'm thinking a scope would help, especially since I grew up shooting with a scope.

I've had my Garand for maybe 30 years.  Haven't shot it much, because the closest places to fire in high power matches are 200 miles away.  This Garand is no collector's item, it might be called a "rack grade" today.  Lately, I've been target shooting at 100 yards -- because the general population around here seems to think 100 yards is a rifle range!  I haven't found any place to really stretch out to, say, 500 yards or more with this rifle.

So -- that being said -- what would a good MODERN scope and mount be?  I've looked at the B-Square, and it's cheap enough, but as I understand it, this mount is made in Japan, and I really don't think that's appropriate to go on this rifle.

I'm thinking a scope of perhaps 12X or more (for targets) might be the way to go, or maybe a variable so I could make short "snap" shots if necessary, and use the higher power for paper.

you can use a rail mounted over barrel and extended eye relief scope

I've looked at those, and I used an extended eye relief scope on a revolver some years ago.  I guess it would work, but I really like the more traditional scopes, mounted (on the Garand) a bit to the left of the ejection port.  I GUESS it's called the ejection port...

Thanks for the suggestion.

I have similar trouble these years with aging eyes and cataract.  I've tried on my M1 Garand and 1903 the scope mount like B square for C&R.  They don't work to my expectation, simply because the mount is not sturdy enough to sustain the 200G instantaneous recoil.  At 100yd, the POI shifts few inches.

So I gave up on those C&R scope.  I did not want to drill & tap to those C&R even though they are not really that fancy as a collection, so G& H is not in my consideration.  Instead, I use a pinhole with the sucking cup attaching to the shooting glasses.  It increases the focal depth.  Now I can see both the front sight and the target really well.

You can find those on Midway or Brownell. Have fun.

Have a gunsmiith install a d block on the barrel and get a d scope mount.

Leave the Garand alone.  Get a bolt gun in .30-06 to scope.

I did the B-Square mount about 15 years ago when I didn't know any better.

It's just unnatural.

I use this...http://ultimak.com/M12.htm
With some of these..http://www.midwayusa.com/product/345532/leupold-1-qrw-quick-release-weaver-style-rings-matte-medium
And top it off with this....http://www.midwayusa.com/product/717528/nikon-force-xr-eer-pistol-scope-25-8x-28mm-bdc-reticle-matte

I know, not true to tradition, but it works pretty good for my eyes and it doesn't permanently alter the iconic M1.
