I stopped by the range Friday afternoon to sight in a friend's new Rossi levergun after I finished an action /trigger job, switched to a safety plug, switched to a metal mag follower, and installed new Marbles 1/16" bead front, folding rear, and tang sights on a friend's 24" octagon bbl 357mag Ross case hardened rifle.  His Rossi is now just like my rifle after he fell in love with it and just had to have one of his own.

He's not that familiar with firearms so when he bought his new Rossi, I agreed that if he paid me for the parts, I'd do the work for free as a favor.  I like to help newer shooters when I can and he really wanted it to look and work like mine.  Anyway, as I said, I stopped out at the range to be sure the sights were on (they were) and evidently some of our friends, the Denver SWAT team, had held a small practice at our range that day. As they police up and leave their brass, I came home with some treasure.

* 285 pieces of Federal Gold Medal Match .308 brass fired from their M700s.

* 1,850 pieces of .223 AR fired brass (mostly FC cases).  Each 1 gal. Ziplock bag holds 755 pieces.

I guess that doing a favor for a friend sometimes is more than it's own reward.

I love that. The range I go to has a bunch of agencies/departments that train there and they never pick up their brass. I can go out and pick up at least 500-600 pieces of .223 and 9mm and probably 1000 .40S&W at any given time.

Makes it nice to keep the cost down and have a supply of brass at the ready. I am starting to get jugs full of brass built up.

Nice score. I used to shoot at a range in New York. A Department of Energy security team had to shoot there once a month. They shot G21s with Winclean. I was friends with the owner. so he let me get dibs on that brass. It was nice stuff, but nothing like what you got.

Nice  Is that FC.223 brass nickle plated or did you just polish it up?

Just the glare from overhead lights.  In fact, I just grabbed it and put it in the bag.  It was nicely dumped into a 5gal bucket so except for a few bits of gravel, it was pretty clean as is.

That's a nice score.  I had a minor score today, finding 301 pieces of LC once fired, and 30 fed. 308.  For my small range, that's a major score.  Everyone reloads an the bucket is usually only filled with 22 lr.

Several local agencys use my gun club for practice, I have a growing collection because of it as well. Actually I never owned a .40 S&W until I had accumulated nearly 7000 empty cases and decided that I should probably buy one. OK, buy two and I'm still shopping for a third.

Who says free brass is cheap?

Well, you did better than I did.  Evidently the police left early at my range today and someone else got most of their brass.  The kids and I managed to find 30-40 newer FC brass (with the small lettering), along with 2 dummy rounds with orange plastic bullets in them, plus 3 live rounds that had evidently had failed to fire and a couple of .45ACPs (including a full unfired round).

It's not much, but helps add to the collection... one of these days I'll build a "wall o' brass"!

Topped off my 12th plastic bucket the other day. They all contain range pick up brass, all boxer.  Brass washed to get rid of range dirt and mud, but the cases are not yet sorted or tumbled.  Each bucket is 4 1/2 or 5 gal.
I have a bit of a project ahead of me in sorting and tumbling, but I enjoy it.
