I've noticed that Serbu's aren't considered the most accurate of the 50's.  But I would like to shoot mine in a match or two this summer (hunter class).  What are it's limitations?  What can I do to be more competetive in my class I plan to shoot?  I'm sure number 1 is practice but I know some of you guys shoot competetively and would really appreciate some tips.  Btw I have not even fired my rifle yet!!!  Working waayy too much lately...

If all you have is a standard BFG you're going to be behind the curve so to say. Did you know that Serbu offers match grade barrels and a set trigger for the BFG?

Anyway, to get the ball rolling you'll need to roll your own or buy match. Most of the BFG's that I've shot really like the AMAX bullet and do well with it. My advice to you is to load some AMAX up and do some load testing to see what it likes. I would load them with 220 grains of H50BMG and try varying the seating depths from 5.45" to 5.70" and see which preforms the best.

Here's the normal disclaimer... "Use all reloading info at your own risk" if you see signs of overpressure, blown primers, split brass, hard extractions... Back off from what you're doing as you've gone to far.

I've got a friend with a Serbu that shoots at Raton and has a real good time.  He can almost always outshoot M82's and can often end up in the middle of the pack, even against guys with AR-50's and M99s.  When we say that Serbu's typically aren't the best choice for matches, that's because they aren't made to in their stock trim.  They're made to be light and fun to shoot.  But that doesn't mean that they won't shoot better than plenty of folks can when fed a good diet of handloads.  You should come out to a match with yours and just shoot.  I'm sure that if you use some good ammo, you can keep all your rounds on paper at 1000 (if you have a decent scope on it) even on your first try and do quite well.

Shoot with what you have.  And if you have a Serbu, or BOHICA, or Ultramag, or whatever don't be intimidated.  Just go shoot.  A guy with a light gun like those above that knows how to shoot can outshoot a guy with a custom match gun who can't dope the wind.

As a technical forum, sometimes we get too caught up with equipment.  Skill is 80% of the long range shooting game so long as nothing mechanical is wrong with your rifle and you feed it good handloads.  I've outshot plenty of guys with match guns with my State Arms.  I've also had my ALS & State Arms spanked by guys with M99s, Ferrets, and AR-50's.  I know a guy with a match rigged Serbu who shoots really well with it.

My point is, just shoot and don't come to try and win.  A new shooter shouldn't expect to win the first time out of the gate.  Try to shoot your best and improve with every match.  That's what I do.  If I happen to place, it's really nice but for my first two years, I never placed.  The change was that I learned better technique and to dope the wind (or shoot between it.).

Just come out  and shoot.  And I would suggest shooting HUNTER for a beginner.  It requires less equipment than the other classes.  (no rests)  That's what I shoot and I find it much easier to shoot than off the bench.  And FYI we're starting to run practical matches at Raton for ball ammo only shoot at 600 yards, prone, from a bipod, no fancy match guns.

Thanks guys.  Yeah, mostly I'm looking to learn as much as I can from others when I go to a match and of course, have fun!  Right now I just want to be armed with some of the basic knowledge before I go though.  As far as I know my rifle is as basic as it gets (serial number is in the teens!).  It has a Super Sniper Scope and I have a Mildot slide rule, 30 rnds of AMAX and a shit ton of APIT and API that I'll likely pull and use ball ammo for plinking so I don't start the woods on fire...

As always, thanks for the info fellas!!

Also I'm using accurate 8300 powder.  Should i get something different for my match ammo?

I'd suggest going with Hodgdon's H50BMG for loading Amax.   It has about the best burn characteristics for use with a 750 grain bullet like the Amax.

Guy that won the World Championship in 2008 was shooting Amax with H50BMG.
