Gentlemen....

im debating on looking into a short AR. The Noveske diplomat is really want i want. I will probably end up putting this together myself.

Has anyone had any issues with the 7.5 inch barrel/gas system? A while back i heard some horror stories but that was back when i first got into AR's and i didnt figure i would have that problem because i "would never SBR" one. Yeah well that didnt last, and now that i have a registered lower, i would like to take full advantage and go short.

Any reason to take the 10.5 over the 7.5?

This is not going to be a weekend blaster gun, this will primarily be used for home defense so reliability is paramount.

thanks guys

use good parts to build the upper and even the 7.5's will run good.   that being said if it's not a weekend blaster i would look at building a 10.5" , 11.5" , or 12.5" upper.   the blast from a 7.5" indoors would not be ideal

I don't want to tinker with an upper to make it work.  For me 10.5" is the shortest on 5.56 I am willing to go but I went with 11.5" for my upcoming Form 1 approval.

Specifically I don't want the HUGE blast of a 7.5" 5.56 and BCM gives there reason for a 11.5" over 10.5" here.

Also check the AR Pistol forum.  Going to be the same function/reliability issues whether there is a stock on it as an SBR or no stock in pistol form. I have a 7.5in. AR pistol and it isn't any worse than my regular AR's as far as kick/boom/whatever some people who don't own one complain about.  With the regular bird cage flash hider on it, sure it is louder, but I run mine with a Levang comp and to me it's the same as a regular 16in barreled AR.   Can there be issues?  Sure, just as with any gun.  Buy a good one or build one with good parts and parts designed for a short barrel like that and it will be fine.  I believe most people who go with a 10.5 or 11.5 over a 7.5 do so because the ballistics are better out of the longer barrel.

I read that post years ago.  It is 4.5 years old.

What if anything has changed?  I'd prefer shorter while maintaining functionality. Any real world experience on this?

I'm not sure if anything has changed and don't have any experience with a 10.5" and very little with the 11.5" but it just made sense to me while reading it.  I didn't get a BCM upper though but went with an Adco with DD CHF 11.5" barrel instead since it is a MUCH better deal.  It has a BCM BCG though in it.

My biggest concern is muzzle blast and noise.  While I do have a suppressor everything I have seen says a 10.5" is hell on them unless you use a brake (which I don't want).  Honestly the 11.5" doesn't seem louder than my 16" uppers to me.

This, but I use my 7.5" for 2/3gun with good results, never a failure of any kind, ever, in ~3k rounds.  KX3 does a good job of taming the blast to the shooter, but I wouldn't want to shoot it in an enclosed room.

I own a few MK18s.  10.3 inches.  The military seems to think 10.3 is good enough to issue to their SOF, so it is good enough for me.  BCM article or no, I don't think any of us will likely ever be in a situation where we will be able to tell the difference.

Like you , I am on the fence about building a 7.5, only just for fun since I already have some 10.3s, and some non-NFA.  If it was for my primary weapon, I would not go shorter than 10.3.  Especially if you decide you want a can down the road.

Build yourself a rifle (or upper) with a carbine or mid-length gas system first that you can use for practical use, and a fun little blaster later.

I currently have the 223 can right now.  This setup will be suppressed.  I'm just worried about reliability.  I really like the looks of the 7.5.  I have an 8 inch 300 blk SBR right now, and without the can, it is incredibly manageable length wise.  Ugh
