Who makes the shortest effective suppressor?  I want to minimize the overall length of my carbine.

I'd vote for the Surefire 556-212, as it's what I elected to go with.  16 oz, and short overall length.  Plenty of db reduction.  But bigbore's suggestion looks good too - all 556 suppressors just knock down the report.  You'll never get it "quiet."  To that end, in my opinion....weight and overall length are VERY important when buying a 556 suppressor.

In any case, good luck with your selection

It depends on what level of sound signature you are shooting for.

Ear safe you're looking at a 6" silencer.  Shorter cans exist that will nock noise down for guys wearing electronic ear pro and shooting in buildings.  The level of noise reduction that the Ranger provides can probably be had in silencers nearly an inch shorter.  Much shorter than that you're not really accomplishing much in my opinion, especially on short guns.
