OK, I have done a look-see around the Site and can not seem to find an answer to this question...Maybe I am blind. I am trying to find out why one would hunt with 12 Ga. 3 inch 00 Buckshot, as in what you would hunt with that shell instaead of 2-3/4" 00 Buckshot. And, what would you hunt with the 3-1/2" 12 Ga. 00 Buckshot? I am just trying to determine the best shell for the hunting that I may be doing...Deer, Turkey, and possibly encountering dangerous game, etc. So, please bear with me and give me some insight into the different shells, please. As always, Much Thanks! Manimal308 |
Nope, actually, I don't know...That is why I am asking the questions. I am trying to figure out what shell to use for the game that I am going to be hunting. I am rather a "newbie" at shotgunning and am hoping to get some good advice from the experts here on the Board. Again, I find the knowledge of the members of this Board a wonderful resourse, and do not mind showing my ignorance in some areas...In other areas I have a large amount of knowledge myself and can assist in answering questions from others. But where shotgunning is concerned, I need some guidance. Thanks, Manimal308 |
Deer where legal, the 3" shell holds 3 more pellets of buckshot than the 2 3/4" one. |
Thanks...I think that you answered my question...2-3/4" and 3.00" 00 Buckshot will be all that I need...I will carry a couple of 3-1/2" 00 Buckshot Shells just for the heck of it...But probably the most I will need for brush hunting will be 3.00" 00 Buck. Most probably good for Deer, Turkey and Pig...I am not interested in Bear hunting, and I don't think that Bear hunting in Florida is allowed anyway. Thanks again, Manimal308, Out... |

What range do you expect to be shooting those deer and pig at? Maximum range with buckshot even the 3" shells is pretty limited. Also 00 Buck isn't really ideal for Turkey. You definitely want 3.5" turkey loads with a nice long barrel and the tightest XX-full choke you can find. |
| I don't use 3.5 inch 00Buck shells for hunting but I do use 3.5 inch shells for duck hunting. I blast the bastards out of the ionosphere. Those ducks think they're out of reach.... HAHAHAHAHA. That's why I have a Benelli Nova. Devastator of ducks and destroyer of clouds. |
This. Right on! Nearly two ounces of full-choked steel shot @ 1400fps has a way of making living things in-flight change their intended course. I miss my 835 Express so much. |

buckshot for Deer or Elk where legal (some places you have to use multi shot, no slugs, Buck and ball is good there too) I use 4 and 6 shot on grouse and the like, and 7 1/2 and 8 shot for trap shooting and squirrel, as well as harassing pests i don't want to kill I have not had good luck with buckshot on moose, slugs work for everything, as for length, I primarily use 2 3/4" shells, I only use the 3" if that is all I can get, or I keep them around for home defense |
Now THAT is good info. Thank you for the link. |
Really good link!!! Thanks! The shotgun that I have is a Mossberg 835 "Tactical Turkey' with a 20" barrel. the Choke is the Ulti-Full .695, 12 Ga. ACCU-MAG. Chambered for the 2-3/4", 3", and 3-1/2" shells. I bought it for 1. Home Defense, and 2. for Brush Hunting (the big bad bush) since most of the hunting in this area is in heavy woods. I normally hunt with 30 Caliber, but want to have some time with short range shotgunning. I guess that I should have indicated the firearm in my first post. I know that some people don't think to much of the firearm, while others "rave" about it. So, there you have all of the info about the firarm, and the intended use of it. As I posted earlier, the 2-3/4" 00 buckshot shells and the 3" 00 buckshot shells will most probably serve me well for the short term. I am thinking that the 3-1/2" 00 buckshot shells may be "overkill" for most general usage. Does any one agree? Or disagree with this? Maybe I should see if there might be a rifled slug barrel made for this firearm to expand the experience. Any thoughts on this? I am in the shotgun learning mode in preparation for hunting season, so, again any observations on usage will be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Manimal308... |

Ok, I have the info that I need now with all of the help provided by the Board Members. Looking at some of the history of Shotgun Hunting, it appears that in the past, many years ago, the firearms available were good, but not the same quality as what we have available to us now. In fact some of the older shotguns were, by todays standards, really "crap", yet the hunters were able to make do and put food on the table regularly. So, my conclusion is this: "A good mechanic never blames his tools." With the exception of the shot shell or load that I shoot in my 835, I will do well when I go hunting and demonstrate that technique and skill will prevail, and win the day. Based on my first one or two field excursions, proper modifications will be made and adjustments applied. Within a short amount of time, all will be smooth!! After all, hunting is supposed to be fun, and a learning process. Again, thanks to all of the Board Members for their input and advice. You have made my adventure even more exciting.
