I have started shooting trap as a hobby.  I have been using mostly Winchester AA loads because I hear they are the best for reloading.  Now that I have a few hundred piled up I want to look at getting a reloader.  I don't need anything fancy or a progressive.  A quality single stage would do.  This would be for 12 gauge shells only.  Does anybody have a recommendation?

I found a used progressive on e-bay.  It is awesome.  The press came with a bushing that works great with Blue Dot for 00 Buckshot loads and with Unique for trap loads.  It allows me to go really fast for trap loads.  The buckshot is much slower as the shot has to be placed layer by layer.

I agree... I have 3 of them (12, 28, .410). They work great.

The MEC single stages are good presses. I don't like their progressives though.

Mec JR.  There are 40 of them on e-bay right now.  If you ever decide you need something faster, you can always resell it and not be out anything.

I'm over 75,000 rounds on my MEC 9000G without a rebuild or repair!

MEC Grabber great bang for the buck, progressive, but not auto indexing.  Get a universal charge bar and you're good to do.

I consider the new style Winchester AA hulls worthless, I weeded all of them out last year from my AA stash, and I trash everyone I come across at my club

MEC 650 for me. Thousands and thousands of reloads on it. Never a problem. Prefer Win AA Grey hulls.

I agree, AAs went from primo hulls to disposable crap.

They went to a 2-piece basewad and they're 100% crap now. Luckily I have 1,000's saved up fro before the switch, but I setup my MEC to run on STS's and they run much, much smoother.

I've scrapped all my AA hulls and now use Ballistic Products' "Multi-Hull" exclusively in all gauges.

Have 761 grabber / uni charge bar, loaded 20-30k with it works great.

Up graded (so I thought ) and got a 9000 auto progressive, call it auto spill

I"m sure someome will disagree with me, but those are my feelings.

YMMV

I'm really satisfied with my MEC Sizemaster press. I have 20 and 12 gauge dies for it and it can be switched over quickly. It has a collet sizer that sizes the brass which works to insure the reloads will function in different shotguns and especially autoloaders and pumps. Don't know much about other presses and how they size etc. I've seen that MEC sells a sizer that collet sizes like  the Sizemaster. I don't shoot trap or skeet but mainly reload hunting type rounds but the Sizemaster works for me. Either 2 3/4 or 3" hulls. With my experience with the MEC Sizemaster I can recommend it or other MEC products. I also recommend the Lyman Shotshell manual or Ballistic Products Inc. manuals if you use their components.
I used to prefer Winchester hulls to load but since the changes to their hulls I now would recommend Remington STS or Premier type  hulls.

MEC!  They all work great and last, my old MEC 600 JR  is on it's 3rd onwner and I bought it in 1974. Best bang for the buck.

RCBS Grand.

The extra cost over a Grabber is worth the reduced aggravation.  I have three Grabbers.

I only reload 28 gauge and 16 gauge. The value packs of 20 and 12 gauge shells from walmart are cheap enough that I can't be bothered to reload for them. If you decide to reload, get something with the letters "MEC" on it. For a non-progressive, get a sizemaster.

You are going to want something more than a single stage in my opinion. I started out with the JR. and still have it. I also have a P & W reloader and the MEC 9000G. Of the two progressives I would buy the MEC.  Some one mentioned the manual indexing press, this is a very good one also. I have also worked away from the new AA to the Remington STS and am very happy with them.
