I seem to remember seeing one in a picture before... does anyone know what i'm talking about?

Who makes them and what is their purpose? Seems like prone or mounted would be the firing position of choice.

There was also a 50BMG handgun.

No flocking way!!!!!!!!

That muzzle break has to be a wonder break to keep from killing yourself with that pistol.

Just is no way I can see anyone shooting that damn thing and live to tell about it.. Does anyone know where I might see a video of some num nut shooting it?

There is a guy on one of our local forums who built a 50 cal pistol using a 1911 frame. He says American Handgunner claims it to be the first 50 BMG pistol. I hope he doesn't mind me posting the pics here.

Not really.  Maadi griffen has a .50 bmg pistol also.  With the right MB it can be done, but only to say they did.  No practicality at all. Hmmm, but I'd bet the fireball would get lots of attention at the range.

+1.  Why isn't that stick thin guy experiencing any recoil?

The first pistol has a piston that it recoils against which would help some, but I (being another stick thin guy) wouldn't be the first one in the room to try it.

I really don't know why anyone would post a BS story, but I guess people do. I am skeptical about certain things, but I will give this guy the benefit of the doubt. This is all he wrote about the pistol. "It's the 1980's, people getting beat up firing big cartridges in handguns without muzzle brakes. This was an experiment to educate shooters how effective a muzzle brake can be on the biggest caliber handgun a law abiding citizen can legally shoot

This pistol was perceived by me on ACAD. I circulated the drawing among half a dozen gunsmiths that provided additional ideas, parts, and materials. The cost of the parts and materials were under $300.00.

It is within the span of a week, a hundred hours culminated in it, and the use of the machines necessary that I transformed the pieces, according to one article, in the ".50 BMG Behemoth Mother of all Pistols!"

I don't doubt that it was made and even fired, but the recoil in that pic just doesn't seem right.

You're not necessarily seeing it at the "end" of the recoil.

Shotgun News did an article two or three months back reviewing three of the 50's. The author shot the Ultralite 50 from the shoulder. I own one and have also shot mine from the shoulder. Its not that bad. About like a 10 gauge. It can and has been done. I am proof. Accuracy suffers as my groups went to 10+ inches from 1-1.5" at 100 yards but you try shooting a 17.5# rifle from the shoulder.

Good point.

Edited to add:  The way he is leaning back to support that pistol tells me the recoil effects ARE going to knock him on his ass!

Why would you want to see some stick thin guy flat on his ass with a 50 cal pistol in his hand? Just kidding.

Don't know about video of the .50, but the videos of shooting the .600 Nitro Express Encore are a treat. I've seen a couple videos of the shooters actually being able to control the thing as well.

This one?

It was built as a lark some years ago. They got a bit popular and was mde in a very limited amount. The British studied them as a use for helo DZ defense by helo crewmembers.
We sold 25 to some African nation to use as counter poaching efforts.
Very few were sold to civilians here in the states. They were a major PITA to make.

What was so difficult about it?  The trigger linkage system?
12/20/2008 1:50:03 AM EDT
[#21]
It was a highly modified 82A1. Then the cutting started from there. Yes, the trigger linkage was a pain. All the welding that was done to it warped it in areas that the linkage had to run through. No2 were alike. Some would be interchangable, but very few without some minor surgery.

It was a hoot to fire. All the recoil went over the shoulder. The muzzle brake had to vent holes drilled in the top of it to vent some of the gasses through to make it more manageable.
The mags started out as regular *2A1 mags then had an M16 style cut out in them to accomadate an M16 type mag release.

I remember that shoulder-fired Barrett .50 & was curious as to why it dropped off the radar.  Never knew that mfg & tolerace inconsistencies were the culprit.  Now OTOH, you guys have that new .338 LM bolty that looks really nice, although I'm curious as to why Barrett seems to be making more bolt-actions & less semi-autos these days.

Accuracy and the cost of ammo would be my guess as to why Barrett is making more bolt guns.

Would Barrett still make one of these if it was a special order request?

A real man just throws his Barrett up and shoots it

Yea i know ,I asked my Dad if he was ready....ear plugs are a must

He taught me to shoot, i figured he would put his hearing protection in
