| I didn't know if I should post this here, but I was wondering what you guys thought about the Sig 556. Takes AR mags, uses the same accesories, and looks great. I hear that with that gas-piston action, it really reliable. Any thoughts? If its good tell me. If it's crap, tell me. I dont want to spend about 1300 on crap. |

Shoot one. You will change your tune. Clean one. You will consider selling your AR's. Is it a perfect copy of the 550? NOT EVEN CLOSE. It is a fine rifle with many excellent features. The trigger is way better than any stock AR trigger and IMHO rivals many match AR triggers. While recoil in a 5.56 carbine isnt much the SIG manages to make it even less noticable and much more controlable than any other AR I have used in rapid fire. Finally by not using a gas tube the SIG stays much cleaner and runs much cooler. I used some POS wolf out of one and the insides looked brand new when I was done with no malfunctions. I have had wolf ammo destroy extractors on AR's within 1 or 2 mags of use and then a several hour cleaning session. The SIG is not for everyone but neither is the AR for that matter. Buy what you like and shoot what you buy. |
Crude? ![]() Do you own one, or have you ever shot one... It has the smoothest action and trigger of any auto loader I have ever handled. Swiss prescision just like a Rolex's interal parts. As for the weight, yeah it's heavier compared to my Colt light weight but it is lighter than my Russian VEPR K. I don't like the handguards either, the original Swiss ones are okay but I really want to get a Brügger & Thomet rail system for it. |
+1 here. Congratulations on your purchase! I myself have thought about buying a SIG 556 for the same reasons you stated. I have not handled one since the SHOT Show. None of the FFL dealers in my area have one and will not order one because they are still too difficult to get. Yes they are heavy but I am very much interested in getting one, probably sometime after the first of next year – it’s the money thing ka know. Spending $1,300 on a SIG 556 is not any more waste of money than buying some run-of-the-mill AR15! |
I bought one anyway, despite thet fact that the Swiss Arms type rifles are what I actually wanted. The stock that came on it is a POS, and will need some type of replacement. The rail on top is a fucking joke. Not just a joke, but a fucking joke. It's way out of spec, bears on a surface on the top of the receiver only about 3/8" wide, the screws protrude from the top of it, and it make removing the handgaurds impossible without gouging little chunks out of them. On many 556s, it's also canted to one side (thanks for that 3/8" bearing surface). Thankfully mine suffers from no such ailment that I can detect. The rifle is a odd conglomeration of REALLY well made internals and REALLY half-assed exterior components. I will hang on to mine for a little while, hoping the aftermarket will come to the rescue and produce a decent rail, some proper sights, and maybe, just maybe, a better lower. The lower works, but I'd rather have something a bit more....ehhh...elegant. All that said, it does shoot really nice and the internals seem really well made. The bolt, carrier, and guide rails in the receiver move like ball bearings on glass yet have zero slop. It seems pretty accurate to me, though I haven't really shot groups with it and even if I did, they wouldn't mean much, as I'm a terrible shot. It's been 100% reliable in every respect thus far, and even spent a day slung on my back in constant rain with no ill effects. |
