The Sig 556 folding mechanism appears in the lates issue of Guns and Weapons for Law Enforcment. It appears to be simply a hybrid of the original folding mechanism and the new 556 M4 style telestock. Functionally, its probably the same as the Ace conversion. After looking at the Sig folder, it would seem that the mechanism will make the LOP longer. After seeing this, I have completely abandonned all hope of a Swiss style folder. Oh well, I guess Ill have to live with a folding Magpul UBR. Has anyone seen the pics? What do you guys think? Haters not welcome...

I bought that mag the other day ...........the folding mechanism does look alot like the ACE folding mech, but some of the pics dont really show a clear enough close up to be sure.
I was also wondering if this is the Commando version they are talking about.......as for the Swiss style folder, I dont see one coming either. I emailed SIG to ask about the newer versions, and all they told me was that people would be pleased with the new models. I would like the Swiss folder as well, as the LOP isnt that big a deal to me, but the inclusion of a lower that takes AR mags is one improvement I really liked about it............the one I got to fire was pretty accurate

Hey Ryno, I just saw a post on SIGforums from a mfgr that builds the semi PKM............these guys are going to take 551 and 552 kits and add the parts to the 556 to build a clone that takes M-16 mags.........no word on price, but sounds good

They are selling just the 55x parts kits for $2500... so it sure won't be cheap.  For those jonesing for a 55x clone, this will be your chance...  $2500 + price of a SIG 556 + conversion costs == 55x clone that takes $75 proprietary mags (no M-16 mags with this conversion).  Still way cheaper than a 55x though.

Yeah, I meant 551 lowers.........my bad..........they are supposed to build this off the 556 upper using the 551 or 552 barrel.........be very interesting to see the finished product. Too bad they cant do one using the M-16 mags, cause I have a ton of them

I wouldn't pay a dime to convert my 556 into something that wouldn't take AR mags, even if the stock looked REALLY cool.

Ah, but it would be able to take AR mags. Just swap lowers

That is how the 556 works today... all you need is a 55x lower.  I'm glad to see this being offered... now for $$$$ folks who want a SIG 556 that takes $75 magazines can purchase one... nothing wrong with that,

Not something I am going to be doing...I shoot with my stock almost totally collapsed.
The 551 is a great looking rifle, but I would struggle finding logic to pay 100.00 for cosmetic value, let alone 2500.00+. I would still love a parts kit though, as I believe the spare parts would be nice to have. I would love an original 551, but I care more about performance and thus I am very happy with my 556. There seems to be alot of price disparity in the Sig 55x line. If you look at LE prices or what LMO sells them for, it isnt 3000.00. In theory, a civvie version would cost lest as it would have a few less parts...so maybe like 10.00 less? It shouldn't cost 1k more...I don't really stress about it anymore though. I was always hoping to own an original 55x because of thier legendary performance and that they are the rifle equivalent or companion to the P226. I have a Sig 551, it just wears wierd clothes....

I am anxious to see what the new year holds for this gun. I called Sig months back and they said they have a .30 cal in the pipe line, a Commando with adjustible sights/folder and a DMR. They said the Commando would be the DMR with a 16 inch barrel instead of 20 or 24. If the Commando looks anything like the old 551 SWAT, Ill buy one for sure. I am definatly not done buying 556's.

ETA: in the aformentioned article, the author stated the original Sig 55x is chambered for a "5.6mm" cartridge. Nope...its chambered in 5.56x45. Every box of Swiss 5.56 I have fired through a plethera of 5.56 guns was marked 5.6mm. I guess they just round up...makes sense to me.

I have been waiting for the folder, but if it looks like the ACE I'll settle for the fixed stock by Magpul.  I am really, really needing a 556 and this appears to be the green light for me- except for this statement.  What new versions are we talking about here?  I only want one and don't want to buy one before they come out with one I want more.  Barrels under 16" are out for me if that's what it's about- any clues here about future models would be appreciated.  If there's nothing on the horizon I'll find one local and snag it while we still can before any future ban comes along.

What about the Sig "Commando" I keep reading about? Isn't it suppose to be our 55x replica coming from Sig?

The only ones I have heard or read about are those mentioned by Ryno in the above post.......I tried to get a little clarification from SIG, but the person I spoke with said that he couldnt give out any definite info, just that we would be pleased with the new versions coming out.......so, I guess we wait till the SHOT SHOW to see what they have in mind

The commando was mentioned in a recent magazine article... in the article, it was based on the 556.  The article talked about a number of new 556 variations planned for 2008 and beyond... however no mention was made of a 55x replica.

Not too bad. I like it, and am SURE they will be following up with a cooler, 55x series side folder sooner or later.

I hope it will have a trigger guard on it, as the one in the picture above is missing it.

I thought the 551/552 barrels had a different thread than the 556. Also, I thought the ATF banned the importation of parts kits with barrels. Am I wrong?

Also, if any of you out there has both a 556 and a UBR, please post of a pic. Thanks.

i own a pile of NFA stuff, so i'm pretty familiar with what is involved. i'm questioning why he thinks he can't go anywhere without "telling the government" first.

Saw the new issue "Guns and Weapons" with the Sig 556 folder.  Basically, they took an ace folding adapter and put a Magpul CTR on it.  Didn't look too bad.  The reviewer did say that it got carbon all over the sandbag as it leaked out of the handguards and worried a little about stripping these parts to clean it.  As well as what a bitch it is to change the bbl.

The reviewer loved it and spoke of its reliability (hard to imagine a gun mag liking a product).

You don't have to tell the government what other guns you own. They already know where you live anyway.
