So yesterday I go into my local gun store and I decide to order a Sig 226 Blackwater. So as I am talking to my buddy, he informs me that the Sig rep will be in today and he will just order it from him. I tell him I will call and check on delivery and I asked if he would get some 556 info from the rep. So I call today and my buddy says he talked to the rep and my 226 should be in next week. What, you want 556 news, oh I thought you were interested in my new pistol? Anyway the rep tells him since Sig was bashed at the Shot Show for the collapsable stock, they are going to offer the 556 with the traditional sidefolder. Hot Damn! The rep told him the price will be the same. The 556 should be available at the end of summer. So while I am talking to my buddy, he states that he has a 556 in his hand. I asked him to explain and the managing marketing director just walked into the store with 556 serial #1. The director said that Sig will offer the 556 with either stock. He also said they should be available at the end of summer. My buddy was on the fence about getting a 556 since he already traded the guns he had set aside for the 556. After seeing and handling one today, he is definitely getting one. He was very impressed with it. He ordered 4 556's and he is getting the first and I am getting the second one that comes thru his doors. Take this as you will but it sounds like we will be able to choose between the collapsable or sidefolding stocks. |
hells yeah! i can't wait to see what that looks like! now i need to start saving so i can get it! |

The 556 uses Stanag mags vis the AK style rock and lock of the 550/551/552. This is to make the gun more price competitive....though I don't really see why the SIG mags should cost more than $20 a pop. Hardly disastrous IMO. Let's hope they ditch all the CAA/Fobus garbage in favour of SIG grade kit. I would however wait to see what the side folder actually looks like. What is REALLY stupid is that they already ahve the folding/telescopic unit that they built for the Navy. DOH!!!!! Simon |
Simon, any links or pics showing the Sig folding/telescoping stock. This is the first I've heard of such an animal from Sig. Is is similar to Gemtech's adapter that uses AR telescoping stocks, or is it a whole new rendition? |

I went to SIG's site and found this.... www.sigarms.com/Products/ShowCatalogProductDetails.aspx?categoryid=35&productid=114 SIG 556 The time has come. No other semi-automatic rifle has captured the imagination of the shooting public like the SG 550 series rifle. For years this legendary Swiss made rifle has been restricted to law enforcement and military sales where it has continuously built on its reputation for outstanding performance, accuracy and durability. Now, SIGARMS® has undertaken development and production of a U.S. made version. SIGARMS introduces the new SIG 556. The SIG 556 features the same high-performance two position adjustable gas piston operating rod system engineered by SIG’s sister company Swiss Arms and marries it to a trigger housing that not only cuts the rifle’s weight by a pound but is designed to accept standard AR magazines. The SIG 556 features a 16” military grade cold hammer forged barrel with a twist rate of 1 in 9”. The barrel is locked to the steel receiver through a unique system that allows the user to easily change out the barrel. The forearm housing the gas operating system is a vented non-slip polymer featuring the SIG TriRail design with three integrated Picatinny rails for mounting accessories. There is a forward mount for right or left side sling attachment. The flip up front combat sight is adjustable for windage and elevation. The Picatinny rail equipped receiver is made of high strength carbon steel with a durable wear-resistant Nitron® X rifle finish. The trigger housing is made from a heat treated aircraft grade aluminum alloy with a hard-coat anodized finish designed to survive extreme conditions. The rifle comes equipped with a smooth two-stage trigger. The SIG 556 also features an ambidextrous safety and is designed to accept standard AR magazines. A rugged 30-round polymer magazine is supplied with each rifle. Spare battery compartments are provided in the ergonomically designed pistol grip as well as the rubber padded watertight adjustable butt stock. The butt stock also offers sling attachment points. In addition to the standard model SIG 556 which will begin to ship in late summer of 2006, SIGARMS will also offer the SIG 556 SWAT. The SWAT model will feature the same compact design of the standard SIG 556 with 16” barrel but will feature a flat top Picatinny railed receiver and a tactical quad rail. These two rifles are the first of several new SIG 556 models that are currently in development at SIGARMS. The wait is over. The new U.S. made SIG 556 begins shipping in late summer – because the time has come. Anyone know if this can be done by hand or with a special tool(s)?? It uses the term "easily", so I am guessing it can be done in the field. |
Yep. Make it look like a 550/1/2 using AR mags and I'm happy. |

Thanks |

You'll have to wait like the rest of us to find out. This is a US mixbreed rifle.... some foreign parts, some US, etc... It cannot & should not be compared to the Swiss Arms rifles. We "hope" it will be as good as the Swiss rifles... but only time will tell ![]() Since the civy SCAR is probably 2 years away... you might as well take the plunge like the rest of us |
Agreed, and it would cost less to machine that way too. Not sure WTF they were thinking.
|
That's what concerns me about the SCAR........2 years away could mean more restrictive laws............so, I might have to check this one out
|
+1 Bingo!! That and a good set of iron sights and I would have one of those on pre-order.... |
| I find interesting that so many were bitching about the folding stock on the XCR, saying they wanted ADJUSTABLE stocks. When Sig does it, it is blasphemy. Where are all of the "function over form" people. I do agree with most of you on the AR stock, but they way they modified the gun to make it take AR mags doesn't bother me one bit. |
If they put the original stock, handguards and pistol grip back, I will be ok with it............I am kinda glad that they use AR mags, as I wouldnt have to hunt down real expensive ones
|
Are you serious ? FN is kind to the civilian market, but they have their hands full with the Military right now.... Plus they will be offering the SCAR to LEO's very soon, so they will not be losin too much sleep at night. We will be extremely lucky to even see a civy SCAR-L, much less an H model. This is why everyone has bitched and moaned about the Sig 556 (me included). It may be our last shot at a nice reliable, non AR, rifle
|
I hope we see them, but I am tempted to cover my bases and get the SIG
|
No they're not. Your comment epitomizes the internet age - no patience. Geez, give FN a break. They've indicated they are civvy friendly with the PS90 and FS2000. Just give them some time to get the military taken care of. I'm as anxious as anyone to get my hands on the SCAR-L and SCAR-H. I also understand that FN has a military contract to fill before LEO and civvy sales. |
I think the reason people didn't like the XCR stock is because it's a five dollar piece of bent tubing. The SIG stock is one of the better folders out there, and I'd be hard pressed to ever have a wire or tubing stock on anything. JMO. |
