With the warmer weather, we've started seeing some of our less favorite woods denizens moving around, ticks & snakes.  Last night I made up a batch of snake medicine (ticks get chemical warfare...).

50 rounds of Speer .38 caliber shot capsules filled with #8 or #9 shot over 3.8 grains of Bullseye.  The #8 shot came from some recycled corroded 12 gauge loads found in an outbuilding we cleaned out recently.

Please, only use on venomous snakes.

I hate to see people kill a snake just because it's in their yard. If you can't identify the snake, just walk away.

Thanks

We have a pretty healthy population of copperheads around here, they are the intended recipient if in too close proximity to the house and yard.  King snakes, etc are welcome...

What could be done with buckshot?

Buckshot idea is interesting, but would have to be smaller than 00 buck due to thickness of capsule.

I don't think I've ever seen an non-venomous snake out here.    Just rattlers (several varieties).  Last one I shot in my driveway with a 12-gauge after it bit my German Shepard.

Please stay on topic. Reloading pistol shotshells.

Discuss what kind of snake to shoot in GD. (general discussion)

So how do you load those capsules? Is there a seal at the bottom that holds the shot in when you seat the capsule? Need a special seating stem?

Looking at the pic dryflash posted, it looks like there are plugs for the capsules.
Do these things break apart upon firing? Would they work in a rifle?

The capsules are filled with shot and a tight fitting plug seals them off. That part (plug) is inside the case and comes with the capsules in the box when you buy them.

I use a wadcutter or SWC seating stem, and you must go very light on the crimp, or risk breaking the capsule.

If you have a Speer reloading manual, there is a section that explains loading these shot capsules.

Can you measure the I.D. of one of the capsules?
