New to the m1a platform, Can a flash hider be put on a Socom 16?

No.

Unless you get a propietary one from Smith Enterprise you can't.  I am sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

I've seen pics with the smith hider. That would do just fine
Is it a special model number, or just the one designed for the M1A?

The socom has a different set up than the M1A / M14.  What he said is what it is. It's a proprietery muzzle set up.  I didn't even know there was another option out there.

The SOCOM 16 threads are proprietary so new attachments are slow in coming.

Arizona Response Systems (ARS) had a modification where you could send in your SOCOM Gas-Lock-Front-Sight-Muzzle Brake (GLFSMB) and they would install a FAL flash hider on it.

Smith Enterprise has a SOCOM muzzle attachment coming out that will replace the Springfield Armory Inc (SAI) GLFSMB and be threaded to accept common .308 flash hiders and muzzle attachements.

As soon as SEI has them we will have them for sale in the EE.

I've always heard that the SOCOM 16 won't cycle reliably without the muzzle brake. How have the aftermarket companies gotten past this without essentially making another brake?
