as subject line goes, this has been a growing curiosity of mine as I sieve through some mags I have that could benefit from this highly experimental mod...
there were obviously some ~40rders created in this way last century by either South Africans or Brazilians? But they were usually done with steel ones, as those can be more easily welded. Al doesn't weld well if at all, and I don't have the will nor the resources to accommodate a TiG welding station myself...could soldering, which reportedly works decent-ish between Al, work here, assuming I cut a mag open, polish the exposed rim, and try to just...sandwich them together? |

I can't weld well, but can solder or braze fairly well.
I would be inclined to do all the cutting and fitting, but would have someone skilled in working with aluminum do the welding, brazing because I wouldn't want to wreck the aluminum. |

They make aluminum "brazing" rods.

You can get the skinny aluminum brazing rods at HD or Lowes usually, that and a can of MAP gas, i've done it using a regular propane torch before but it takes two to get enough heat, MAP works a lot better. Have added material to an undersized part before using this technique, turned out great. But putting two mags together is a whole different kettle of fish, I hope it works, i'd probably try just doing a 30 rounder first. I've seen mag splices done with steel mags before and they worked just fine. |

How have you seen them weld or braze the two magazine springs together (which is the other prong of the question my OP lacked), or do they just use a new mag spring from a different pattern or design altogether? |

It would be easier to weld two steel mags than aluminum - more people can weld steel better than aluminum.
I did find a welder that could do aluminum that did weld a cut down 40 Rd HK22 mag to 20 (Back when 40 rounders were $15 surplus and no 20 rounders were around cheap). It wasn't easy but he did it. I tried brazing an aluminum mag and ended up melting away too much base metal = a mess. Aluminum is such a heat sink its hard getting it all hot and getting it to braze well (or was for me anyway). |

This is three steel mags welded together. The springs were trimmed then spliced using steel ferrules and silver solder.
I've had these for nearly twenty years and they're still going strong

Cool ! Not going prone
 Someone on this forum had an MG13 drum modified with a G3 Tower - Hands down the coolest G3 mag ever in my opinion. I wonder how hard it is to convert one and weld a tower on???

Op, you get the mags cut and angled the way you want them. You can send them to me and I will braze them for you.
