I own an FR8 . It was my first large bore (bigger than .223 ) They're handy, you can load them from stripper clips. If I lived in a ban state it would be front line equipment for me.

Personally I am not going to mod out an FR-8.  Too classy the way they are.  I will pick up some of the ammo on bando's from AIM as it is perfect for the little rifle.

Leave it stock or sell it to me.  Those things are getting hard to find for a decent price anymore.

I only gave 250 for the rifle it had been sitting next to an old ass enfield (one of the nasty wirewrapped grenade ones) for several months, the only reall problem i have is the sights are off and i know it uses the funk of center front sight post, i just havent had time to shoot it and sight it in.

You did good.  You could flip that at any gun show here for around $400.

As with many other rifles, I wish I would've picked up an FR-8 when they cheap and available about 15 years ago.

I picked up two when they were cheap.  I bought a stock one for $100 and a "sporterized" one for $75.  The sporter has a scope, cheapo plastic stock, and the guy removed all the "gas tube" and front sight block stuff, leaving the flash suppressor in place though.  Short, handy, and accurate.  The FS on a bolt gun is pretty snazy too.  I don't like the stock, as it's one of those blind mag ones, and it messes up the magazine.  I need to take a look at it and figure out the problem.  But you can't get five rounds in the mag now because the floorplate-etc are all gone due to the stock's design.

First I had an FR-7, then sold it because I don't like 1893 type actions.

Then around 20 years ago I made a kick-ass Scout rifle with an FR-8. Sold that a few months ago.

Now I have a dead-stock FR-8 that needs some work, but will remain stock for the collection.

They are cool rifles, very accurate, but shitty rear sights IMHO.

I have one, don't have any pics immediately available though.  Bought it last year on a whim and haven't shot it yet.

As for "poor man's SOCOM 16" I consider the MAS 49/56 in the original 7.5 to be my nominee for that title.

(Only problem is poor men can't afford 7.5 at 70 cents a round).

I'll have to get my FR8 to the range.

I had one. The trigger was nice but it was not accurate with any ammunition I tried, and I tried a lot.

Damn. Mine is one of the most accurate rifles I own. 3inch groups with Port surplus. I wonder if your barrel is worn.

OP:

Keep it stock.

I was fortunate to buy an FR-8 in new condition.  Unfortunately, the front sight had internally corroded so as to require the ministrations of a gunsmith to dis-assemble it and mfr the parts to re-construct it.

Moral of the story is to put a few drops of penetrating oil on your FS long before you attempt to adjust it.

That said, it is a very nice little carbine.  Those who are recoil shy would be well advised to buy a brown slip-on recoil pad from Pachmayr.

IIRC, muzzle devices for the CETME rifles would fit on the FR rifles.  I have a CETME compensator that works well mounted to my FR-8.  Of course, it accepts the bayonet, and I still have the original flash suppressor, which is quite necessary if using this rifle at night or for other serious social purposes.  The OEM cotton sling should be replaced with a modern synthetic unit, and the stock ought to be coated with tung oil, which will render it more or less impervious to moisture.

If you know how, smoothing/stoning the trigger components can be very useful.  Aftermarket triggers are available, but there is the question about altering the internals of the stock to consider.  The OEM trigger, if not too worn out, gives good results.  If needed, buy new parts––it's a Mauser 98–– and go from there.

Some say the apertures on the rear sight are a little tight in diameter, but to my older eyes, they do all right.  As things stand, and given the collectibility of these things, I would hesitate to drill out the apertures.  YMMV, but remember it is easy to drill out, and much harder to add back.

If anyone knows of a vendor for the front/upper handguards for these rifles, I'd be obliged.

I agree totally with the MAS 49/56, choice for the poor mans SOCOM but you are right with the 70 cents a round being too much for the poor man, and every 308 49/56 i have ever encountered were goobered up beyond beleif. BTW i am thinking abotu having the trigger smoothed up a lil bit other than that shes staying stock.

I picked up a FR-7 in '94 for $180.

Had the same problem with the front sight. The locking screw had rusted internally, and trying to get it to move, the screw head  broke off flush. With the help of a machinist friend we were able to drill out to old screw, using a vertical mill. Required a lot of patience, several special small  chucks, and several long aircraft drills. But we did it without disassembling the barrel. Once the locking screw was repaired, the front sight post was good to go. I did break off the front sling ring in the process; it's a soft steel eye ring. Still need to repair that item.

Now I've got the rifle sighted in.  PS: a local 'smith wanted $200. to do the job.  I don't blame him, it was a tough job to do.

PSS: I just checked Apex; they have, in stock, the triple frame locking pin (front sling ring) that I need. It's listed under CEMTE parts. Thanks!

After reading RAF's post I remembered seeing them for sale recently and was racking my brain trying to remember where...
