I know this is a long shot but. I Bought a Nikon P-223 scope. It is set with BDC for a 55gr polymer tip bullet at 3240fps. Anyone want to share loads they have using either Vmax's or Varmageddons that are very close to that speed out of an 18in barrel.

you would need to get a chrono, load up different amounts of powder, and see which comes closest to your factory load. Or, even better, work up a load that is very accurate to your rifle, 99% of the time you can make something better than factory.

Correct answer here.

Ya I was just being lazy. I just loaded some up and will head to the range on Wed with the chrono to test againsnt factory Vmax loads

I use H322, but my 55 grain loads run about that speed out of my 22" barrel, so that doesn't help anyone.

It's going to be a challenge to match that velocity using a 16 inch barrel.

Keep in mind 100fps less isn't going to make all that much difference.

He has an 18" barrel, but I think the challenge is still there.

I'm willing to bet you end up creating a load that works better than the factory VMAX

I lose 100+ fps going from my 26" .223 bolt action to a 20" service rifle. I lose another 200 fps going from the 20" to a 16" carbine. 300+ fps total. The loss is not linear in .223. The shorter barrel releases the energy created by the powder charge way before the bullet has taken advantage of it.

It is impossible to use any BDC and expect it to be on the money. It's a generic tool intended to get you close. You are better off with it than without it. I would choose you best shooting load and zero the scope/ammo at 300 yards based on the BDC it came with. Then shoot shorter distances (100, 150, 200. 250) to see how close it actually works using the BDC as designed. Record whatever information this process reveals. This will give you more valuable information than assuming the BDC is going to be nuts on simply by duplicating a specified velocity.

It won't matter what your actual velocity is, the end result is the key to success.
