I want to be able to see 223 holes in high power targets at 200 yds. Can someone recommend a spotting scope that is under $200 that will fit this role ?

I found out the hard way more than once that you get what you pay for with optics. Whether it be binoculars, spotting scopes or rifle scopes if you double your budget you will have better luck finding something that will do what you need.

Yes KOWA spotting scopes are very good...but...the one I use for high power cost $600 on sale and the eye piece, which was purchased separately, was around $300...but it is an excellent optic!

post this question over in teh hi power/dcm/cmp section and you will get some good answers,

I use an old bushnell , I bought off of ebay a few years back, with an old freeland stand,
works great at 100, but only so so, depending on light, at 200 w/5.56
does good w/ .30cal holes,

Not out there.

Look at getting the best Nikon you can afford, IMO. The clarity of a Nikon will surpass anything in its price range & @ 200 yards, a .223 hole is gonna be a darn small hole...............

With the proper lighting and background the Konus might get the resolution, but this is iffy at best.  Even the best spotting scopes scopes( ~$2500 range) will have trouble resolving a .223" hole at 200yds without ideal lighting conditions.   An angled white background behind the target should help improve the lighting problem.

If this is the case I won't even bother with a spotting scope. I'm willing to spend significantly more then my original $200 figure if the scope will definitely work all the time. What I don't want is to spend $600 and still only be able to see the holes sometimes.

Would be cheaper to get a wireless camera setup + small LCD for viewing.

I routinely shoot at 300 yards.  I have a Leupold 40-60 power spotting scope.  Even when hitting Shoot-N-See targets it is still difficult to find 223 holes.  If there is a mirage you can forget about it.  30 caliber holes are no problem.

Thats actually not a bad idea at all if you have a laptop; you'd need to determine what resolution would be required to see the holes, not sure if a cheap 640/480 cam would do it. You'd need the wireless net cam, a battery pack for it, and two high-gain directional WiFi antennas to cover the distance.

Save you money until you can afford something that is quality.

A $2500 scope isnt "quality"? What should he save up for, palomar?

You won't find it unless someone is selling it cheap. I use a Kowa spotting scope, it's expensive but worth every penny and you only buy it once.

What are you talking about?  The OP stated that he wanted to spend $200 and have something he could see .223 holes with.  IMHO there is absolutely nothing available in this price range that he would be happy with.

So, my advice is to put off purchasing one for a while until he has enough coin saved up to afford something that, in the end, he will be much more pleased with.

Why is this so hard to understand...

Ok I see, you didnt read the thread, only the first post. Sorry.
It has been pointed out that even with a $2500 scope you will likey not see a 22 hole at 200Y, at which point the OP said he wouldnt bother.

Not so ! You can clearly see .22 caliber holes at 200 yards with a quality spotting scope and I don't mean with shoot and see targets. My Kowa cost about a grand with two eye pieces and both give excellent  vision at 200 and 300 yards. $200.00 just won't cut it though. I hope he get's what he wants but it's just not a cheap sport to get into. My advice would be to save up for it, every time I thought I would be satisfied with something or the other that was cheaper than what I wanted I was disappointed. Save up for it and you will be very pleased.

To me the $1000 or so a decent spotting scope is gonna cost could be one more rifle I own before a potential ban, so I'll just keep walking to see my hits for now.

That is a good point. Buy guns now while we still can and get all the other stuff later.
