I was recently told about a pre-ban Springfield Armory AR-15 clone in collapsable carbine configuration.

I was un-aware that SA ever manufactured an AR. If this is so, does anyone have any experience w/ them? Quality, parts interchangability, & current ballpark value are issues I am interested in.

Thanks in advance - GCF

I don't think SA made any AR15's. BUT, it would be ironic if they did since the M16 was one of the weapons that the military bought from outside suppliers, that eventually caused to original Govt Springfield armory to be closed down.

Springfield Armory of Geneseo, IL made AR-15 type rifles during the early 80's.  They were offered with optional walnut A1 stocks. I saw a few at gun shows back then and they looked pretty nice.  The last thing I heard was that they got into trouble (with Colt?) and pulled the plug - possible patent infringement? I don't know. I don't remember the carbine version, but its been a long time.

The owner says that it was Colt that pitched a bitch. I guess I am wondering if this gun would be a shooter or a collector?

Springfield made some and did get in trouble with Colt. The project leader and many of the AR15 group formed their own company later on. Hence we have Rock River Arms.

Ummm,... I am pretty sure that RRA was formed by 2 brothers that left ARMALITE.

(Trying to say that in the nicest way, dirfire...)

I love wood stocks.

But they DO NOT belong on the BLACK rifle.

Eagle Arms was started by fugitives from SA. I lived in the area at the time.

Hey Colt Shorty -
Thanks for the pic!! Made a believer out of some of us, I'm sure.

What in your opinion, would one of these babies be worth - w/ or w/ out the wood? Collector or shooter?

Thanks in advance - GCF
