I am thinking I may purchase one from the local gun shop. He has a nice one for $500.
My wife wants to shoot longer distances, should I make this a long range shooter or should I buy a new Rem 700 or Savage something or other?

WHat say the hive?

I own a Springfield Armory (the real one) M1903 MkI and it's a very enjoyable rifle. The action is a smooth as a hot knife though warm butter. When I un-greased the thing (CMP purchased at $350 IIRC) it was still zeroed and put lead on target at 250 yards first shots. That said it does have it's limits - like mounting a scope on it would be nearly sacrilegious. The trigger is nice but I haven't touched it up. Plenty combat accurate out to hundreds and hundreds of yards.

I also have a beautiful 700 VSS in .308 with some aftermarket parts, a lightened trigger, and some very expensive mount, rings, and scope on it. The Remington has all the advantages of modern steel and design and can outshoot the M1903.

Bottom line is what she's gonna do with it? The M1903 will plink, hunt, and combat right along side the Remington but the 700 is going to be a better target rifle.

If the 1903 you are looking at is in good shape and hasn't been screwed with that's not a bad price. I got one from CMP for $450.00 ( field grade ). I haven't shot it yet. I got it mostly for the historical aspect of it. If you want a little history thrown in go for the 1903.
