| For those of you who own Springfield M1As, what kind of ammo do you use & recommend? The owner's manual keeps telling me it needs to be "mil-spec." How do I know if commercial .308 ammo is "mil-spec" or not? Thanks in advance for any info. |

I use surplus Lake City M80 ball, Prvi Partizn(PPU) M80 ball, and my own handloads. The handloads shoot the best, but the surplus stuff shoots pretty good. I hear good things about the Lithuanian ammo available from Wideners.com. The Prvi Partizan is also available here. This stuff is good to go in my SA M1A Std and my M1A NM. Be cautious of some hunting ammo. You must stay under 180 grains or lower. For hunting ammo, the Winchester 150 grain Power Point and the Remington Express 150 grain Core-Lokt should also be good to go. If you reload, I'd only reccomend using Military (LC or other) brass. These rifles are tough on brass, so you will only get 3 or so reloads from once fired brass. These rifles are also finicky about some powders. I use IMR 4895 with great results. -Dan |
This is wrong. This issue has been beat to death about commerical/M80 spec ammo so do a search. Get an adjustable gas plug and it will bleed off the excess pressure of commerical ammo. The plug is like 30-40 bucks and replaces your gas plug. Otherwise, stick with mil-spec ammo, like basically the surplus that is for sale, and you'll be fine. Oh and stay away from Indian ammo. I believe that the flavor of the month is lith ammo. I'm sure if you read a few threads here you can read all about it. |

Some factory ammunition is safe for use in the M1A...some isn't. I know Hornady warns you not to use their "Light magnum" loads in a gas operated weapon, their standard .308 loads are fine. If you are unsure on what's safe or you're looking to use some of the factory premium hunting loads I would invest in a Schuster M1A adjustable gas plug....it's cheap insurance. |
