I'm very new to the M1's so I asking for a little advice or info..
Have a friend wanting to sell me a NIB Springfield M1 Garand NM rifle and my question is, are they any good..?? Markings on rear of receiver are; U.S. RIFLE CAL. 30 M1 SPRINGFIELD ARMORY 3400XXX It is a SAI made rifle and has "no circle T" beside ARMORY..!! TIA old_papasan |
| I am by no means an M1 expert but something doesn't add up. The serial number you posted would have been made by Springfield Armory (the government arsenal not the Springfield Armory Inc. of Geneseo, Illinois) in early 1945. I don't know how one would procure a NIB Garand from that era. I also don't know that SA started making National Match rifles until WWII was over. Somebody with a lot more knowledge than I will chime in soon. |

TIA old_papasan That serial number puts it as a USGI SA receiver. When Springfield Inc. started making M1 Garands in the early 80's they started at or about the 7 million range because in 1957 the last real SA Garands ended in the 6 million range. The SA inc Garand I got from them in 1985 was 7007766 and I should have never sold it. |

Called Springfield Armory about this Garand and this is what they told me;
1. USGI receiver originally built in 1945 by Springfield Armory.. 2. Was a CMP rifle and was rebuilt by SAI in Sept 1991 and upgraded to a NM rifle.. 3. Unfired since upgrade as I have original box (green and white from Springfield Armory).. That's about all they could tell me about this rifle and now it's up to me to decide if I want to purchase this garand, so if anyone has anything to add or any suggestions I would appreciate hearing from you..!! Thanks to all who replied to my post (question).... old_papasan |
