Folks

My father in law has a Springfield Model 1861 Rifle in very good condition. He asked me what I thought it was worth? I honestly have no clue and wanted to post a question to the experts on this board?

Can you guys give me a ballpark so I can help him out.

Sorry no pics. He doesn't even use a computer so digital pics are out of the question.

I will assume you are talking an . 58 cal original and not a replica.
One important thing that defines condition in these rifles is the bore.  What is its condition?  Dark, pitted, etc will affect the value.  Condition  of the metal and stock also are factor.  That makes your ballpark $500 (fair outside, dark bore) to $2000 (nice wood, usable bore).  These considerations may be altered if someone wanted it as a wallhanger.

If I was to buy it, I guarantee it would be shot after being checked out.

Thanks Doc,

I'll check it out next time I visit him. It was given to him when he was a boy and he is now 78. It's been kept in good condition according to him and has no rust visible and the wood looks in good condition.

Appreciate the time.
