I was at my parent's house tonight and I remembered my dad had an old rifle from my great grandfather tucked away in a closet. I had seen it before and I knew it was unique so I went snooping. Turns out it is a Springfield Model 87M. I have never seen another one and I don't know much about them. It is missing the rear sight and it looks like it was drilled and tapped for a scope at one point as there are a couple screws filling holes in the receiver. Can you experts get me some info? I'm sure someday sooner or later I will get this rifle so I'd like to know what I'm working with.

I have a 87A that I inherited,

They are somewhat rare. I don't know a ton about them, but had done some research a few years back when a friend acquired one. I've since forgotten most of what I read. From what I do remember, they were used as a substitute for people who could not qualify with the M1 Garand, for whatever reason (or so the story goes, I don't know how true it is) and are made to resemble one. There's some info available online if you search for it and I seem to remember one forum where guys were listing their serial numbers. They were made in very small numbers.
