I have a post ban Springfield SAR-4800 Bush Rifle.  I have all the necessary American made parts to convert it to a legal pre ban configuration.  The two parts that look like they will be most problematic are the charging handle and muzzle brake.

What tools do I need to replace the charging handle?  If a roll pin punch is required, what is the proper diameter?

I've seen arguments for both pinning and tack welding or silver soldering the muzzle brake.  Should I wait before I permanently attach the muzzle brake and see if the AWB does in fact sunset?  I'm in no great hurry, so I can afford to wait.

I appreciate any advice and insight.

What's on the muzzle now?  If it is a 4800, I don't think they came with anything unless it was one of those odd-balls that came in right about 1990.  If that is the case, you may want to contact SA to see.  There are a VERY small number of 4800s out there that came in between the 89 executive order and the 90 legislation.  Those are pre-bans and you can have anything you want on the muzzle.

As for the CH, yes, you need to drift out that little roll pin.  I don't know the diameter, but its not difficult.  Once that is out, the rectangular lug will pop right out.  Then, remove the hand guards and move the HG retaining ring forward and push the CH out the front.

Cliffy,

It has some gawdawful cylindrical hunk of metal hanging off of it.  It's neither a flash suppressor, nor a muzzle brake.

Is there an online resource so I can check to see whether mine is pre or post ban?

I'm going to order a roll pin punch and holder from Brownells then.  I figure the approx. $5 I spend will prevent $25 of frustration from using the wrong tools and bunging the job.

Any advice re: permanent attachment of the muzzle brake and what brake to use?  I was thinking of maybe using an OPS INC if they have the proper thread.

Leave the thread protector on there until the AWB expiry date. Then screw on a combo device.

Is it the device with the slightly flared end and the couple of machined grooves?

If so it's held in place by a small dia pin that has been plug welded.

The BBL is threaded 9/16-24LH so any device that is mfg'ed for "metric" standard BBL's will fit.

Thanks all.  I think I will leave the monstrosity of a thread protector in place until the AWB sunsets and I can get a true flash suppressor for it.  Any recommendations as to model and vendor?

The gun was made by Imbel.  The correct one would be an Imbel short combined device.  Condition on them range from bare metal to brand new.  Just start looking now, and you'll find one that will be the right shape and price.  Picking one up now is better anyway, as you'll beat the rush in Sept.

I've posted several pics of my favorite.  Its the short Steyr.  Its a 3 prong thing which is nothing more than the full sized STG that has been cut off just behind the threads.  They are cheap and look bitchin' on a short barrel.
