ok, so within the next year i want to get a springfield m1a. but which one??

i'm trying to decide between the standard, the scout, and the socom 16 (thought about the socom 2, but i really don't need the rails. but we'll see how i feel after touching it).

the standard has a good long barrel. the scout's is shorter, but still probably good for at least 300m. the socom is uber-sweet looking, and i do love a carbine.

aside from the fact that i need to go touch all three and shoot them if i get a chance, does anyone have any input on these three rifles? cause...really i guess i'm just trying to figure out what barrel length i want.

help?

I think it depends on what you want it for.  I've got a standard.  I'd go with the Scout over the Socom, but thats just me.

Depends on what you're using it for.  If it's going to be your primary defense rifle, I'd go with the Scout as it's size makes it more versatile and easier to hump around everywhere.  If it's going to be a role player, a gun that you bring in for longer ranges and heavier hitting, I'd go with the standard 22" as it offers a little more velocity and a longer sight radius.  I got a Scout thinking it could do everything for me, but a year later I think it's much better suited as a role player.  It's still my favorite rifle though; you can't go wrong with either.

The Scout 18 inch length is the best overall length for an M14/M1A to me. It can be very handy and almost as short as a Socom when it's setup with a Smith E. DC Vortex and GLFS. It's an 800 yard 7.62x51mm rifle though and that range is more than a person needs for practical shots in my opinion. If you want more range than that than your talking a more dedicated long range rifle and that's where the 22 inch Fullsizes would be a benefit if you don't just want a more powerful caliber altogether. It will do 300m easily as long as you do your part though. I ended up selling my Scout and keeping my 22 inch as I found out I didn't need two M1A's, but it wasn't because the Fullsize was the better all around barrel length. It was more sentimental and that it's got a H&R usgi chromelined on it. When I do end up changing the barrel out on my fullsize, I'd only put an 18 inch barrel on.
