| I am duracoating a old shotgun in camo and am looking for local alternatives to Avery high temp vinyl. I have read that Oracal 651 can work for ceracoat but haven't been able to find any first hand use of duracoated projects. I guess my main concern with trying it out is that it is a permanent vinyl and I'm a bit worried that it will pull up the paint layers underneath. I also have a bunch of 813 that my wife uses for project stencils but again, not sure how that will hold up. |

I do not know the exact application specs on Duracoat. With Cerakote, I use a lower flash cure temperature of 150° and bake it for about 3 to 4 minutes longer. Seems to be if you go over 170° the adhesive can separate and bond itself to the lower coating. That said, once the part is fully cured, you can get most of it off, if not all, by scrubbing it with an acetone on microfiber cloth though this can “polish” the coating a bit. You might be able to use adhesive remover to get it off with less work but I personally have never tried that because I don’t have any on hand. When removing, the stencil material is much less flexible and becomes somewhat brittle from the heat so they do tear easily. I do spend a lot more time getting the stencils off. The material is also thinner and a little harder to get started so I often have to use the tip of an Xacto knife and slowly slide it underneath the material to get it started. On a positive note, the material being thinner does create less stencil ridges between the layers. |

Acetone eats away duracoat, so that will probably be a deal breaker. Last night I did a test run with Oracal 813 and quite a few corners lifted, so that's not a solution. I think I'm just going to have to pony up and get a roll of Avery hi bake. |

The Avery high bake is not what it used to be. The EPA banned a substance they use in the adhesive and they had to re-create the formula with something new. I have a lot more issues with it lifting now. On large stencils, I’ve even had them shrink. I’ve lowered the flash cure temp to 165° and that has helped a lot. The important thing is when you pull it out of the oven, if any areas have lifted, you need to press them back down immediately. If you let them cool back to room temp before pressing them down they will not always hold. The 651 does not lift at all. If doing two color with a 150° flash cure, I would not even be concerned with adhesive residue. It seems to only happen after repeated heat cycles when doing multiple colors. The main concern would be your ovens temperature stability. Mine has a recirculating fan inside of it so I don’t get hotspots. I also have two temperature probes for my controllerto try to keep the temp stable throughout the entire oven. My temperature swings seem to be between 5 to 7° depending on what temp I’m running. Without the recirculation fan and the additional temperature probe I would have temperature swings of up to 15° and that could definitely cause a problem with the 651 |
