Think it's about the same for parts list for an MSAR? I haven't been able to keep any AUG, as friends decide they must own. |

Either way, I think the data I shared above can give people some awareness to which parts are likely to break. Always good to have spare parts handy. It is easy to get them from Steyr USA as mentioned in OP. Call them. Get the parts. Good peace of mind if you do shoot your AUG often.. |

Excellent OP. Thanks again. Does anyone have experience/knowledge of the AUG recoil/action spring? I assume the springs are sealed and enclosed inside the twin "action bars" and interface with the long steel "rods" attached inside the receiver. (Those rods seem like a potential failure point also if they somehow get out of alignment) Do they ever need to be replaced, serviced. oiled? Is there a replace/service interval like the recoil spring assembly in a Glock pistol? p.s. I shot my AUG this weekend at a 2-gun match (I did great- for me). One interesting experience was during a stage, I was shooting from a barricade and somehow, while rubbing the gas-regulator on the wall while shooting, must have turned it off. The rifle turned into a bolt action and I finished the last few shots in that mode. After the stage, assuming my rifle was broken somehow, I saw the gas regulator (suppressor version) had turned slightly shutting off the gas. Lucky I didn't launch the thing down range (probably through a no-shoot) and lose it. I was back in action for the last 2 stages without problem but it's something I need to consider shooting around cover and objects. I may need to find something that covers/protects the gas-regulator. p.p.s. If something can go wrong, it WILL happen to me during a match!!! |

This would be the first case I've heard of with that roller having issue. Glad it was an easy fix for you. It probably won't affect much either if you lose it since the early AUG A1 design didn't have it either. |

As mentioned in OP, my recoil springs are still fine in my AUG A1 with 14000rds. I don't do anything to the springs but I guess it wouldn't hurt to put some oil down in there. It does feel plenty strong compare to my other AUG rifles with barely any rounds through it. I guess that is the benefit of having a dual spring design. I know someone with a well worn Russian captured WW2 Walther P38 (also dual springs), and that gun was still reliable with quite a shortened/worn springs when he decided to swap them out. I remember my KAC SR15 Mod1 factory recoil spring starting to feel weaker around 5k mark so decided to swap it out just in case. If the springs do get worn out, you do have to use a heat gun then use a wrench to torque off the front pieces to access the springs inside the dual stainless guide rods. From what I understand, you can request this service from Steyr USA. No idea on cost though. |

Make sure you have the regulator rotated correctly , allowing the spring loaded locking tab to actually lock in the notch on the gas block. It takes quite an effort to make the regulator to unlock and rotate. I shoot VTAC and from cade as well, no problem. For reference, I've seen this in a Youtube video, could be a similar thing. The guy never had the regulator actually rotated correctly to allow the spring loaded locking tab to lock in the notch on the gas block. As he was shooting the rifle more and more, the regulator eventually vibrated enough to rotate itself out of alignment , blocking the gas intake from the barrel completely/partially to stop the rifle from self loading. ![]() Spec Ops Review & Test the Steyr AUG |

Im pretty sure it was snapped into its recess properly. Maybe pushing and rubbing the regulator plug against a barricade while shooting made it loosen and rotate. The gun had worked fine before. And after I rotated and locked the plug in the proper setting, it worked fine again. Again, weird crazy shit happens when under stress and under adverse conditions. |

| I had an extractor pin failure on my A2/USR. I bought it used, so round count prior to my ownership was unknown, but it was a very low round count based on the bolt group and ejection port wear. I probably only put 2k rounds on the gun by the time it failed, though much of that was suppressed with an AAC m4-2k can, which is very high back pressure. The ejector pin failed while I had the can attached. |

My friend's USR also broke the extractor pin as mentioned in OP, but it was around 8000rds instead of only 2000rds. We also found this AUG A3M1 below with extractor pin breaking, around 12,000rd mark. https://www.reddit.com/r/AUG/comments/1231wx9/something_finally_broke_on_the_aug_at_around/ Breakage on the extractor pin seems frequent enough to warrant having spares just in case. Seems to happen around 8k-12k from other guns. Yours happening at 2k is definitely way earlier than expected. |

Both of our rifles were A3 M1's, purchased 2015. Mine had around 1000-1500rd when the little roller fell out while field stripping. Not sure on my buddy, but I'd guestimate in the 1500-3000rd zone for him based on his range habits. |

The AUG aftermarket company ARID has an employee/company rep posting his 10k round count report below: https://www.reddit.com/r/AUG/comments/12d5vts/10k_round_aug_update/ He did say he uses Surefire SOCOM. No failure on the roller's retaining pin. With yours and your friend's rifle bought around the same time and failing so early at only 1k-3k rounds, and with so many other guns with much higher round count not having that problem, I would be more inclined to believe it could be an assembly flaw for a short period when yours were made. |

My mistake there for sure. Meant to reply back to another message but I guess my reply also applies for your early breakage on the extractor pin. Sidenote, I legitimately dislike the new style of ARFcom. It is way harder to notice who I'm replying back to without the user profile pictures and with the usernames being that much smaller. |

Interestingly, Apex is selling Surplus AUG BCGs from Austria. 2nd demo picture also shows a missing roller: https://www.apexgunparts.com/steyr-aug-bolt-carrier-assembly.html I'd say it would be a good backup to just squirt a little blue locktite onto both sides of the retaining pin (not removing the pin just squirting onto) as a little extra failsafe. |

Good eye. Though, I am more familiar with those parts with "M" prefix being Malaysian kit parts. From Austrian military training pictures I've seen with Stg77 and updated Stg77 A1 MOD, they should have 2 letter code then followed by 3 numbers. For example from the 2 I've seen: KE 544 (Stg77 A1 MOD) & BB 156 (Stg77) For Irish contract AUG, it is typically 6 numbers with no letter prefix or suffix. Malaysian guns were often abused with little care. Not saying it isn't a good reference but just saying maybe it is something to consider. I'll keep an eye out on what my friends' AUGs are doing in that regard. I pretty much only shoot AUG A1 (early production) now which doesn't have that roller so I can't really chime in on the durability of that part. At least my A3 as mentioned above having 9000rds still have that roller intact. |

It wasn't brand new, but it wasn't that old either. Probably a factory defect with a void in it or something. I found some cheap from... I think Ratworks of all places, and ordered like 3, because they didn't cost much. Replacement running fine. |
| I was just looking at the Aug spare parts kit the other day. Guess I should go ahead and get one, it will help assure that nothing breaks.😂 |

Also don't think you'll need a firing pin based on info we shared above. I think you might as well call up Steyr USA and get few of each of the pins and springs in the spare parts kit package. Those are the ones to have spares for IME and IMO. |

Minor parts like springs and pins as posted above seems to break around 6k-10k rounds. It doesn’t make sense to shoot 20k rounds only to have 2-3 spare complete INOPERABLE rifles with gutted parts. Per your method, and since some parts do break earlier than other parts, I’d be going through 2-3 (or more) complete guns just to get their $100-150 minor parts and with those 3-4 guns as “spare parts” I’ll likely never use. Side note, they are seeing similar situation in Switzerland where the Army is now gutting complete guns bc they are now out of spare parts. They now have a lot of “gutted complete guns” with missing common wear/breaking parts. That’s a lot of wasted money. It doesn’t make sense to buy a new or used complete car just to gut out the brake pads, tires, and rotors. Complete rifle doesn’t make financial sense as a “spare parts bin”. But it does make sense as a backup firearm. |

And how many parts from that do we actually need to service a broken rifle w/ common wear items? Also like cars, complete car is valued less than sum of its parts if you part them out. But again as mentioned, no one is buying complete cars just to get the tires, brake pads, rotors (unless absolutely no choice). Obviously I can't convince you on this but maybe others can at least consider my opinions on this. It is just wasteful to buy complete rifles to treat it as spare parts bin when many of its parts won't be what you need. Buy complete rifles as immediate backup. Don't treat them as items you gut out from to service another rifle. |

Bolt 5. Bolt sleeve 6. Bolt cam pin 7. Rear roller retaining pin 8. Rear roller (assuming its lost when the retaining pin give out) So, why not just get the factory spare parts kit, a spare bolt, and the rear roller and retaining pin? |
I can’t stand it to think my life is going so fast and I’m not really living it.

In 30 years of AUG ownership the only part I've ever broken was a firing pin. And it was the old style without the spring About 10 years ago I replaced the springs in the bolt just for fun and got a replacement bolt. Those I ordered directly from Steyr |

Extractor - Not mentioned in OP as wear item. 2. Extractor retaining pin - Definitely get it. 3. Extractor spring - Definitely get it. 4. Bolt - Might not be useful unless approaching ~20k round count. 5. Bolt sleeve - Not something to get unless you have early A3 bolt sleeve w/o relief corners. (A1 and A2 having different pattern, and late A3, A3M1, A3M2 have relief corners, check OP for pic showing both) 6. Bolt cam pin - Might be good to get but lazyengineer's gun breaking at 3k-6k seems oddly early when many other guns with more rounds don't have it breaking. 7. Rear roller retaining pin - Might not need since it loosening at just ~1500rd seem to suggest assembly QA rather than common wear item. 8. Rear roller (assuming its lost when the retaining pin give out) - Might not need since it loosening at just ~1500rd seem to suggest assembly QA rather than common wear item. Why not just get the factory spare parts kit, a spare bolt, and the rear roller and retaining pin? B/c you might not need the spare bolt, rear roller, and rear roller retaining pin. And factory spare parts kit won't be all useful to what it all includes since with the multiple guns above, some with quite high round count, have yet to need these parts that are including in said spare parts kit : - Extractor - Ejector - Ejector spring - Piston gas rings - Piston return spring - Bolt spring sleeve - Bolt spring - Firing pin - Bolt sleeve (not needed unless you have an early A3 w/o bolt sleeve relief cuts as shown in OP) |

Those I ordered directly from Steyr I've never broken a part. I think I bought my first AUG in the late 80s / early 90s. I actually shoot them too... for example I've ran close to 1,000rds through one over the past 7-8 days. Just buy a spare rifle, bury it in the back of your safe, and wait. |
|
If you're serious about shooting AND defense then you should really have a minimum of two identical rifles: A) Range / Trainer (unlimited round count) B) Primary Duty (low round count) If you ever "wear out" your Range Trainer ... then the Duty rifle moves into the Trainer slot after you buy a Duty replacement. This is a mechanical failure induced logistical advancement program. |

Good thread. My preban has a bolt roller but doesn’t have a firing pin spring or the upgraded bolt locking piece. I think one of the Battlefield Vegas threads also details some AUG breakage. Here’s a somewhat uncommon spare: Attached File |
Pretty much focused on off-grid property, acquisition of needed things for an uncertain future, and lightening the load of things.
|
I'm surprised noone has mentioned a spare piston. Apparently they do fall apart after lots of shooting. As for the extractor, extractor spring, cam pin; those are all parts of the bolt iirc. So a spare bolt would cover all of those things. The cam pin is inside the bolt. Besides that, get a spare firing pin and bolt sleeve, and bolt sleeve spring. Speaking of spare parts, is Pete Athen's online store still open? I googled PJ AUG, and his website is down. |

Ive never had one break BUT while shooting a match from a barricade I must have been rubbing the front of the piston on the wall and turned off my gas regulator and went from semiauto to a straight-pull. I guess it was possible to turn it enough to unlock the pistol and shoot it down range. So a spare would be a good idea. |

You have to laterally push the tip against a heavy spring to unlock it, and the rotate it, for that to happen. I guess possible, but that's a new one! |

I've yet to see a worn out piston itself. Even on guns with 13k-20k rounds. Why not just get the spare bolt, firing pin, bolt sleeve, and bolt sleeve spring? I'll copy paste what I posted above since it is quite similar to what another member asked. But basically b/c you might not need the spare bolt, firing pin, bolt sleeve, and bolt sleeve spring. 1. And factory spare parts kit won't be all useful to what it all includes since with the multiple guns above, some with quite high round count, have yet to need these parts that are including in said spare parts kit : - Extractor - Ejector - Ejector spring - Piston gas rings - Piston return spring - Bolt sleeve spring - Bolt spring - Firing pin - Bolt sleeve (not needed unless you have an early A3 w/o bolt sleeve relief cuts as shown in OP) Pete Athen isn't in biz anymore AFAIK. As mentioned above, best way to get individual spare parts would be to call Steyr USA and ask for Grant Irwin (gunsmith). He can get you individual parts you want. (his email is : [email protected] ) My friends and myself have good luck with getting all the spare parts we need. |

If there is interest I was thinking about making up a batch of bolt sleeves for the AUG as the Nylaug guys would like them and I hate having to buy an entire repair kit just for that one part. Sven Manticore Arms |

I ended up calling Steyr and ordered some extractor pins, extractor springs (because I tend to lose them and the little rubber insert thing since they are NOT captive in the extractor), and also the bolt locking sleeve and spring. Not sure why I need the sleeve and spring but I have had problems with reattaching the spring to the sleeve before and I can see myself breaking it somehow out of frustration. I plan to put an extractor pin, spring, and maybe a gas plug in the back of the stock just in case. The person at Steyr was very nice and helpful and even had a cool Austrian-sounding accent edit: I wanted the little tiny easy-to-lose parts not just stuff that breaks. I am MUCH more likely to lose an extractor pin or spring when simply cleaning the gun then actually break one from heavy use. I have spent many hours crawling around on the floor in the garage or gun-room looking for some damned part that launched and disappeared... |
