Range toy with an LPVO. If I ever do pay to hog hunt, I would use it. I am not going to reload. What are the good reasons not to go 6.5? The biggest negatives against the Creedmoor is barrel life, availability, and cost. Much difference in muzzle blast from a 19" barrel? Since the early 90s I have drooled over the Mannlicher Schoenauer 1903. Since the MS 1903 isn't going to happen, I thought I would try to kill two birds and get the Steyr Scout that I wanted for nearly as longs as the 1903, in 6.5 (yeah, I know it's not the same 6.5), which is why I am even considering it over the .308 |

I'd go Creedmoor but either will be fine. I don't think cost and availability is that different between the two. Looks like you can still find decent Creedmoor for closer to $1 a round. SG has a bunch of the Deer Season XP for just under a buck and I imagine that would work fine on a pig. As "cheap" surplus 308 basically doesn't exist any more I wouldn't really worry about it and buying 147 fmj for close to what you can get the cheaper hunting and target loads doesn't really make sense either. With most centerfire rifle rounds like this reloading can pay itself off very quickly even if you are using premium bullets. |

| Of your three cons to 6.5, really the only accurate one is barrel life, and that will only come in to play if you’re shooting comps with this thing, which I’m guessing you’re not. As for muzzle blast, they use the same amount of powder so it’s probably a wash, but it should be suppressed anyway! |

They are really equal out to 400. Past 400 is where 6.5 out performs. And you can't make the claim that 308 is everywhere because 6.5 is too. Can almost guarantee that 6.5 is the most common caliber on the line at your local range any day of the week. I'd go 6.5. |

I have had a 308 steyr scout for a couple decades now. Terrific rifles. I haven’t got on the “ modern” cartridge bandwagon, and shot 308 competitively out to 1000 yards. It can do just fine for almost all applications. If you reload, a TREMENDOUS advantage of 308 is bullet variety. I have reloaded 308 using bullets as light as 70 grains ( 32 acp pistol bullets) with specific light load data to replicate things like 32/20 for short range indoor plinking and bullets up to 220 round nose just because I had them laying around, and they all shot acceptably well. The original scout concept was specifically a 308, so if you are traditional like me 308 is the way to go. Sure there are ballistic advantages to the 6.5 ( it wouldn’t be as popular as it is otherwise) but for typical field applications those advantages really don’t become apparent |
FWIW.... Steyr Scout II (Counter Strike sniper)... How Accurate is it? (Primary Arms PLX LPVO) And to further complicate your choice... I would consider factoring in the New 6.5CM PEAK + ammo coming out. Potently 300FPS more is alluring... terminal performance and ballistically. Just food for thought. |
