With the up-coming election i'm looking to stock a handful of lbs. of general use rifle powder. As they say, "just in case".
Current calibers: 22-250 243 257 Roberts 25-06 6.5x55 270 win. 7mm-08 7mm Rem mag 30-30 30-06 308 I'm thinking H4350 will supply useable loads in almost all of the above, but real open to suggestions. Should also cover the other relatively standard loadings out there. Thoughts? |

Doesn't answer your question but I'd just stock up on whatever powders you have already worked up loads with in your rifles. IF things got that bad you won't want to do load workups using components to find new
loads with one powder that might not be ideal for all your calibers. I'd stock up on powders for the rifles you shoot the most and would be the first you'd grab if needed. l'd buy a pound or two for the one's that you don't shoot so much. With your list of calibers I'd still buy at least two different powders to store for rainy weather. Or you could do all the load workups now for future reference but that still will waste bullets, primers, and powder. Just my opinion now with a pretty good supply of powder and components available. |

If I could buy only one, I'd buy primers. They are nearly impossible to replicate or substitute.
Powder has never been completely unavailable. You may not get your favorite but you can get something that will work. The bullet situation is closer to the powder situation than the primer situation. With bullets there are additional options such as making your own by casting or by swaging. Brass can get tight but tends to last a long time, so if you have a bunch, you can probably get through the coming drought. If things get tight, you might be able to barter primers for powder, bullets or brass. |

If you can find it in quantity, I'd sock back a couple 8 lb kegs of Varget.
A decent alternative with mild temperature sensitivity is Power Pro 2000MR. Personally, I just pull the trigger on 32 lbs of WC-844. Now to get another 5k of SB SR Primers from Cabelas... |

the answer is, "yes".
stock up on powders and especially primers. I don't like doing this, stocking (over-stocking is actually what we're talkin' 'bout here) up on highly flammable materials, but we have no choice. It was only about a year ago that powders and primers FINALLY became once more widely available after a shortage that lasted for over two years. This was really BAD. For my part, I have no intention of letting it happen to me again. I have close to 20k in primers and enough powder to allow me to load most of them. I don't feel comfortable about it, but there is no other answer. Just remember to have good storage infrastructure and you should be okay. |
| good luck finding H4350, I do agree it would work well in most of those cartridges. H4895 and varget is another great multi use powder but will leave some velocity on the table with the overbore cartridges. if you cant find H4350 i'd reccomend buying a keg or two of H4895 or varget and a keg or two of H4831 or ssc for the overbores. |
