What are some ways to identify the maker of my M1 Garand stock?  I've tried searching, but I'm not finding anything. Here are some pics of mine.  It's a Springfield.  1955 manufactured rifle.  Bought it from the CMP almost 2 years ago.

Thanks.  It does need a bath.  I got most of the grease off and out of it.  Might do a BLO treatment on it soon

I would just clean it up a little with a damp rag and leave it at that. Adding BLO would considerably hurt the value of the stock set and I've seen it done a bunch of times. Obviously it's yours and you can do what you want, but I wouldn't do anything that could harm the collectability of my M1's. If you want a really nice looking stock I would just get a new set from the CMP.

Sounds good.  I don't want to hurt any collectibility.  I did clean it some, just need to clean it some more.   I actually like the stock that's on it, all the character marks. Thanks for the info, I appreciate it.

Good call. That's a very nice DAS stamp on the side of the stock which makes it worth a little more. Mine is worn to almost nothing.

Care to explain how it would hurt the value of the stock and how you have seen it happen a bunch of  times???????
Thats total Bunk, rubbing in BLO will not in any way hurt the stock, in all actuallity it only helps preserve it and keep from drying out .Linseed and Tung oil is what was  used on USGI stocks originally

BLO wasn't used in USGI stocks; RLO and PTO were. Almost every time that I've seen someone cover their original stock in BLO and then try and sell it they end up having to lower the price before it will move. In those same instances you see people asking "What did you coat it with?" Now this is with collectors, not Joe Blow who just wants a Garand and could care less/doesn't know.

BLO isnt much different than RLO.
I have been collecting for many years and have sold early WRA and SA stocks that are worth 2-3 times the OP's stock  that I have coated with BLO. Never ,ever once did anyone haggle on the price becuase of it.
I can take the OP's stock give it a light cleaning and a coat of BLO and no one including you would know any differnet
If you would strip the stock down  bare and refinish a colectable stoc, yes that would affect value somewhat

If we were talking about BLO from the 40's/50's then I'd agree with you. But the stuff you get off the shelf from Lowe's today is definitely different. But I really don't feel like arguing over the details. If you were able to sell those stocks without issue, then that's awesome. And if the OP so chooses to do the same, then I wish him the best and hope he gets a shit load for it when he decides to sell (if ever). I just personally wouldn't do it with BLO.
