Sorry if this is in the FAQ's I didn't look first.  Anyway, I was looking on ebay at Benchmade auto's and one guy stated he stored his properly with the blade open.  Is this a common practice to save the spring or is it just BS like barrel break in on the AR?

It is about half and half. A well made auto spring will be just fine whether stored under tension or unloaded. Cheaper ones may have a problem taking a set.
