I had just completed refinishing my Winchester 70 .30-06 and was in the process of putting it all back together when I stripped the threads out of one of the holes for the rear scope base. Not sure how I managed to do it, as I was not giving it the gorilla treatment, just one hand on the screwdriver going nice and easy. I felt the screw starting to get snug and was just getting ready to give it that last little bit of torque, when I felt it give. I figured the screw itself had failed, but was able to back it out and can see the threads are gone in the hole.

Not sure what my options are to solve the problem. Can I have a gunsmith drill the hole out a bit bigger, tap it and get a base that uses bigger screws? I wondered about going to a one piece base and seeing how that worked, but figured I would post the question and get some input from others.

Thanks in advance.

Best option is to have it drilled for 8-40 screws instead of the original 6-40.

Well, you could put some steel wool in the hole.  If there are any threads left, the screw will grab.

But tapping for #8 screws is better.

Thanks for the input guys. I had posted this on another forum too. One of the responses there was about a set over slightly oversized screws that Brownells offers. You use a tap and recut the threads then use the oversize screws.

This got me thinking about what I may have had in gigantic bin o' parts. I knew I had some screws from various bases used over the years. I dug through it and found a set of screws that were almost twice as long as the ones that I had come with the bases. I tried them and with luck on my side, they caught the threads below where it has stripped out and fit just deep enough to not come out the bottom side and interfere with the bolt. I cleaned everything up and loc-tited the new screws in place and am pretty confident it will hold. I was surprised at how short the supplied screws were after trying the longer ones.

Now for a range trip to see how it all went back together...
