How come the M1A's have a stripper clip guide on the receiver?

To reload with a stripper clip

Nah really? I mean, why would a rifle that readily takes magazines have a stripper clip guide? Did they leave it on there in respect of the Garand? There's gotta be a reason.

Respect for the Garand? I don't understand. The M1 was loaded with a 8 round en-bloc clip, It did not have a stripper clip guide, or use strippers. The stripper clip giude on the M14 clones and on the orginial m14 WAS to load the mag with, The aussie ammo I have is loaded on 5 rnd strippers and I load the M14 clone I have, using the stripper clip guide, it works.

Because the M14 has one and the M1A is a close copy of the M14.

The clip giude is used to load the Mag while it is still in the rifle. Can you live without it? Yes. Is it useful? You bet.

Agreed, especially when all your magazines are empty and you're down to the ammo in your bandoleers.

Instead of having to remove the magazine to top it off, you can strip rounds, five at a time, into the magazine.  It sounds very practical to me.

Strippers are great!
The other day I fired 80 rounds from my rifle without removing the mag.
Top off the mag, slap the extended bolt stop and keep shooting

IIRC, because back in those days doctrine was not "magazine heavy" like it is today.
Box magazines were seen as a way to have a lot of ammo on hand in the rifle.
You carried a few magazines, but kept most of your ammo on Stripper clips.
Then you would recharge as needed.
I hope that makes sense/is correct.
