Here's an idea I've been toying with for about a year....take a regular duffel bag, cut out the middle ~18", sew the bottom and top together to make a GAG bag (grab and go, kinda an "active shooter" bag)

Seems to have worked out well....I even transplanted the handle, strap, and pocket to the bag.

Cutting:

Handle and strap (strap is too short, will extend it later), note new seam above the handle:

Overall:

Contents of the bag include a MAV-type bib w/5 AR mags (3x1 + 2x1) w/other small pouches, binos, thigh holster, eye/ear pro, Ka-Bar, ammo, other small items. The closing method works as issued (3 rings onto a stud, clipped with shoulder strap)

Grab it, a rifle, and a hat....GTG.

pretty cool idea, but why not leave it as issued giving you more room for kit?

This. Or, for the best of both worlds, put some kind of snap or velcro arrangement in it that temporarily reduces its volume.

unless they're stuffed full those duffles suck to carry around.  Short of having compression straps sewn onto the outside (top to bottom) you'll be hard pressed to come up with a temporary way to reduce the volume.  That said having one bag with about 6 inches cut off the top would really help for when you have a duffle/ruck on your back, duffle in front, an assault pack in one hand, and your .gov laptop in the other.....LOL yes I have turtled around like that before...and more than once there's also been another bag balanced ontop of the ruck as well.

I don't need more kit.

If I had a full-size db, I'd have to dive in and fish around to recover what little stuff I would need....plus, if it was full-size, I'd be tempted to bring more stuff...and really, all I need right now is more ammo (which is too heavy for a full-size db)

I'm just a regular guy, don't need a room full of different gears for different theaters/operations. Just a few mags, compass, and a knife...and a convenient way to carry it all.

That's pretty neat, Red_Pill.  A simple/cheap/rugged way to carry what you need and no more.  With all the military-inspired bags and clothing that's in style now, a stubby duffel bag would be pretty inconspicuous.  Works as a trunk bag/get home bag... cool idea.  I could see college kids digging it, too.
