This was itching at me: What's the difference between 5.56 NATO and .223? Someone in the "Useless stuff" thread said they were different, and Balzac72 told me they were too, but interchangable, what's the difference? Hmm where is Troy when I need him...

just to sum it up for you...

.223 Rem SAAMI spec is a little tighter than 5.56. (chamber dimensions).  The 5.56 CASE is slightly larger than the .223, and may be tight in a .223 chamber.  This can lead to overpressure situations.  

THUS

OK to shoot .223 from a 5.56 chamber, but not too good to shoot 5.56 from a .223 chamber.

Kinda right.  There's no difference in the case (brass) dimensions ...just the chamber dimensions.
